Between Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne they make the majority of the popular Dark Romanticism stories. The Minister’s Black Veil by Nathaniel Hawthorne and The Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allan Poe are both very well know Dark Romantic era stories and great examples of the stories of that time. These stories both use symbols and share tones that make these texts what they are. Whether it’s Edgar Allan Poe and his characters slowly going insane or Hawthorne with stories of people that are slowly dying.
Edgar Allan Poe's life almost definitely influenced his literary works especially how melancholy his poems are. From reading his poems he speaks about the loss he had experienced in life, especially with his first wife, Lenore who he loved very much and whom was devastated of her death. In the poem "The Raven" he speaks to the raven, asking him if he could help him forget about his wife's death. The only thing the raven says to him was "nevermore" it began to drive Poe mad, he began cursing the raven by saying that he should be able to forget his wifes untimely demise.
The themes of the two authors passages can be compared in the event of dealing with God. the passages both talk about everyone's a sinner, and God is the one to judge. As it state in “The Minister’s Black Veil”, “Have men avoided me, and women shown no pity, and children screamed and fled, only for my Black Veil?” This quote proves that Hawthorne's and Edward’s themes compare because god should be the only judge and when people judge God is provoked by their wickedness.
Nathaniel Hawthorne and Jonathan Edwards have a similar theme in both of their writings of basically, God sees all sins, every single one is known and every single one means something, or is supposed to. They both have similar and different themes and styles. Jonathan Edwards and Nathaniel Hawthorne, both use rhetorical devices in their writing to cause an effect, some are similar, some are different. The differences in the writing can show how one style or theme can be more noticed than a different style and theme.
Edgar Allan Poe was an extremely talented American writer and is very well known for his short stories and poetry. His literary work was often centered on Gothic fiction and he chose to pursue this genre because it satisfied the public readers. Poe was born in 1809, his father abandoned the family shortly after in 1810 and his mother died in 1811, leaving him orphaned at a very young age. John Allan and his wife Frances Allan decided to take Poe in and although they never legally adopted him, he lived with them until he was an adult. In his adulthood, Poe and John Allan tended to argue quite a bit over money problems and lack of money eventually became the reason that Poe had to drop out of the University of Virginia.
Edgar Allan Poe was abandoned by both of his father's, in result of that, they affected his life greatly. First off, according to the biography video, Poe’s father abandoned his family when he was only a year old leaving his mother struggling to provide for her three children, performing tons of shows until she contracted tuberculosis. Right off the bat, Poe was left with no father figure, lacking daily needs, and barely getting to spend time with his mother until she gets sick and leaves him as well. At not yet three years old, Poe was left alone, separated from everything familiar to him. Secondly, as stated in the first article, “he never quite meshed with John.”
