It has been used for various purposes, from getting the reader to question society, to reflecting on something in the past, and many more. But countless times it is used to protest or challenge an ideal or societal norm. Literary criticism is utilized in both, A Raisin In The Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, and The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, to challenge racist ideals and fight to give black people an equal opportunity. In the play, A Raisin in the Sun, a poverty-stricken family struggles with racism, holding them back from living the life they want. The interaction truly showed how integrated racism and stereotyping had become in people’s minds to the point where people attempted to use it as an excuse to tyrannize others. In the novel, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, Star, the main character, faces a lot of struggles and loss of relationships, from normalized stereotypes and racism. Star is a 16-year-old girl who lives in the “hood” and attends a private school known as Williamson Prep, which is a predominantly white school. Within that school, she has a fake persona known as Williamson Starr to avoid being seen as a stereotypical black girl. This persona doesn't react to racist remarks, including ones from her friend, Hailey. But after Khalil, Starr’s childhood friend, dies, she starts to realize the severity of Hailey’s remarks. In addition, an article titled, “Perfecting Blackness: An Analysis of Respectability and Security in Angie Thomas’ The Hate U Give”, by The Mackey Journal, discusses Respectable Policies and how it poses a negative effect on the black community.
