Fingers race across a keyboard with “clicksandclacks”. Each finger racing to pass off its letter to the next finger. A precise marathon. The typewriter clicks with a “cling” and the pencil scratches out its final lines. The writer leans back and looks down at their work. A smug smile seeps across their face as they look down at their accomplishment. Then, the face twists into a grimace and a huff of anger flows out of their mouth.
The rapid fingers backspace- crumple- delete- destroy the words. The writer gives their hand a shake and a second’s pause before letting their fingers undertake the race once again. Is this possible? No matter the era, no matter the machine, creating a work of literature is no easy task. Getting a literary work out into the world and into people's mind to critique and flounder over is even harder. cummings is often known for his lowercase letters and not being one to capitalize his name. When cummings capitalizes a word, although some may say it is random, others could say he is giving importance to that word. He wants his reader to grasp onto the fact that he chose to give emphasis to this word above the others. The poem, “In Just”, has only two uppercase letters, one being the J of just and the other being the M of the second time (and only second time) the balloonman is mentioned, “balloonMan whistles. . .” This unusual pattern is another defining characteristic of e. e. cummings. Coover also gives an unorthodox structure to his writing. Robert chooses to exclude the use of commas and other grammatically correct writing tools from his work.
