A Tragedy And A Melody A timeless love story, The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy containing old themes; however, these concepts can still be found in modern day writing. Although the works of Shakespeare are old and somewhat out of date, the ideas and plot outlines of this tragedy are presenting themselves in new and upcoming things. This story takes place in the late 1500’s, but there are new pieces of literature whose themes go hand in hand with that of Shakespeare's story. Maroon 5’s “Daylight” has a very similar storyline to Act III Scene 5 of The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, though they do have differences. In “Daylight” the singer describes this event coming up suddenly, that they “knew this day would come/ [they] knew it all along/ how did it come so fast?” (Maroon). This alludes to them being together for a long time and expecting their separation, while Romeo and Juliet did not know that they were going to be separated, an. Romeo and Juliet were also not together for very long, unlike the two people in the song appeared to be. Romeo hears of juliet and says; “‘Now I have stained the childhood of our joy. With blood removed but little from her own?Where is she? And how doth she? And what says My concealed lady to our canceled love?”’ (Shakespeare 1). This was the first bump they hit in their relationship, and it came as a shock when they were not sure if they would remain together,as they had only been together for one or two days. The two stories are different because in one they are together and expect their separation, while Romeo and Juliet don't see their relationship coming to an end, for it has just begun. Anpther differenxe between the two pieces is that in Romeo and Juliet they use gender pronouns, such as he, she, her, and him, whereas in “Daylight” they do not use any, nor do they specify which genders they are talking about. In “Daylight” there are no gender pronouns: “And when the daylight come i'll have to go/ but tonight i'm gonna hold you so close” (Maroon). However in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet the Nurse is one of the many characters who uses gender pronouns when she says; “‘Oh, he is even in my mistress' case, Just in her case. O woeful sympathy, Piteous predicament!”’ This shows the difference between the two because throughout the whole song it is not specified which genders are being discussed, but in The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet it is clear who is who and what gender they are by the use gender
