In a tragedy, the literary tragic hero possesses heroic qualities but due to their tragic flaw, they go through a downfall causing them to suffer. At the expense of the tragic hero, it is for the audience to feel better about themselves, and be reminded of redeeming qualities of humankind. Three main theories of the tragic hero are Aristotelian model, the Shakespearean model, and the modern tragic hero. Each model has five defining characteristics, which are nobility, hamartia, downfall, anagnorisis, and suffering. Subsequently, Monroe ended up going through a rough time after ending things with Arthur Miller, and “needed her pills more than ever.” (Dorfman) Miller claimed that, he thought he married, “the happy girl that all men loved,” but learned that, “with all her radiance, she was surrounded by a darkness that perplexed me.”(Dorfman) Shortly after Monroe and Miller split, Monroe’s dad passed away, and she blamed herself for his death. Consequently, Monroe would stay in her dark room in bed all day, and mentioned having suicide thoughts. Because of Monroe’s suicide thoughts, analyst Marianna Kris got Monroe to sign into a clinic to try another detox. She ended up leaving after only four days because the place was a psychiatric ward. After that, Monroe then began seeing her doctor again. The doctor ended up diagnosing her as a “borderline paranoid schizophrenia.” He hired nurses to watch over her everyday activities, he tried his best to help her. Monroe was failing at showing up to work and completing her job. She would stay in her dark room all day and take her prescription drugs.
