In her narrative, Rowlandson frequently alludes to the Bible and asserts her undying faith in God. She produces an optimistic tone, even amongst the hardships she endures. For example, she mentions how “the Lord renewed my strength” (234) and “dealt mercifully” with her many times, and that she “fared better” than her captors (235). Rowlandson explains how God gave her the “strength” to persevere through her struggles, and that God treated her “better” than her captors because she believed in him.
In the final account with Anne Wampy William Apess uses “quotes” from her to show that even Native Americans late in age can become devoted Christians. Throughout The Experience of Five Christian Indians William Apess uses intellectual and rhetorical sovereignty as well as characterization to show that Native Americans are people who can think for themselves and represent themselves anyway they see fit. “The Experience of Anne Wampy” was the last entry in William Apess’ The Experience of Five Christian Indians and I argue that it was the most compelling argument of the five throughout the work. “The Experience of Anne Wampy” is very different from the other four accounts in the book, instead of being converted at a very early age or relatively early age like the other four, Anne Wampy was not converted until she was seventy years old. She describes how the Indians “went on, burning, and destroying” (para. 0.1a) houses, “split open [the] bowels” (para. 0.1a) of their dead victims and “strip[-ping] [them] naked” (para. 0.1a). To add, Rowlandson’s use of animal imagery also underlines how like wild animals, the Indians are also inhabitants of the harsh wilderness reminding her readers that the Indians are not identified as humans. They do not live in the colonizer’s society or civilization. Besides animal imagery, Rowlandson also makes use of hellish imagery when referring to the Indians.
Previous theories indicate that the colonists left for the nearby Croatoan Island and left the message of carved wood for whoever was going to return. Instead Quinn believes the colonists left Roanoke and headed for the Chesapeake Bay where they were going to live among the Native Americans. Quinn suspects the Native Americans on Croatoan island did not have the resources to house and feed the colonists. His source for this theory was mainly, William Strachey. Strachey stated that the “men, women, and children of the first plantation of Roanoak” lived among the “Indians” for twenty years, but were then killed by hostile Powhatan Native Americans.3 However, there are some flaws in this theory.
The difference between the voices is that the Captive suggests that only God can deliver Rowlandson from her “imprisonment” and the Survivor suggests that it is the individual who is able to survive due to instincts and skills. This is the classic example of “Never trust the author. Trust the tale” as they produce different effects on her narrative. If you trust the author the narrative is seen as a story of devout faith and God’s reward for faith kept, that if you have faith in God all you need is God to live. If you trust the tale however you may see that Rowlandson only survived because of her skills in sewing and naturally courageous attitude adding God as a secondary thought.

Rowlandson displays a change in her perception of "civilized" and "savage", in spite of the fact that her overall world view does not alter.
