Social Conflict theory is a sociological theory that argues that society is made up of different groups in society that are all competing for power and scarce resources. The theory focuses on the inequalities of groups such as such as race, sex, class, and age. These inequalities may determine one's social status resulting in conflict. This theory was originally derived from Karl Marx who is considered the "father" of conflict theory. Karl Marx believed that society was made up two unequal groups of people: the people who have all of the power (haves) and the people who are striving to attain the power (have nots).

Hubert Spencer would also contribute greatly towards influence of Philosophy. His role was similar to that of many of his colleagues and friends.
A Rhetorical Analysis of William Graham Sumner William Graham Sumner had a great influence on Social Darwinism in the nineteenth century. Sumner was a Sociology professor at Yale University, who adopted the idea of Social Darwinism because of his belief in the survival of the fittest. Even though he did not fully commit to Social Darwinism, he did promote the idea of the constant struggle against nature. He explains that in order for survival, one needs to struggle and compete with nature to provide our basic human needs of food and water. During the Gilded Age, businessmen and the middle class men supported the theory of Social Darwinism which was first introduced by the pioneers of Charles Darwin and Herbert Spencer.
This concept is based on Darwin’s “survival of the fittest,” but applied to the human constructs of Capitalism. The theory of social darwinism is that “certain people can become powerful in society because they are innately better.” This theory was fueled by the idea that you need to have money to make money, which meant that because some people were already supplied with their own sum of money, it meant that the rich would get richer, and the poor would get poorer. The group that most commonly benefitted from this concept were men, usually white, wealthy men, and would leave lower class white workers, farmers, women, and minorities to be all placed below those up at the top. All of these groups had different experiences as to how the theory affected them; Lower Class workers were working very hard at lower wages, and responded in outrage when they received a ten percent decrease in wages, which created the need for unions and labor parties to help meet their needs.
Social Darwinism was a theory that the traits and characteristics that an organism had, would determine if the race or nation would be successful in their survival or if they would be able to successfully breed (Hodgson, 2005). Being an unfit member of society meant that you had particular traits or genes through breeding, that over time were would lead to the downgrading of the human race. One explanation for people to be unfit is that they are considered to be economically poor individuals. Those individuals who were successful both economically and socially were also assumed to be biologically fit and the best chance for our species to successfully survive (Hodgson, 2005).
