Gil Jungers appropriation of Shakespeare's ‘Taming of the Shrew’ into the modern teen film ‘10 things i hate about you’ is a successful appropriation because it appeals to a contemporary audience. Appropriation is when composers use other texts to construct new texts by appropriating parts of other texts. In appropriating the play Junger has kept some aspects of the recongines and connections which makes this an engaging film. The sisters Katherine and Bianca. Katherine is a difficult person in both texts. In the play she's described as “Cursed and Shrewd”. In the film Joey calls Kat a “Bitter self-righteous hag” she also described as a “heinous Bitch”. Bianca is described as “sweet Bianca” in the play. In the film she described “the favorite” and she was very popular with men just like the play. Another similarity is that the fathers in both the play and the film have a rule that they can't marry or date unless the older sister does. Also both the fathers are very controlling. In both the play and the film the sisters dont get along, in the play Bianca and Katherine fight and Katherine slaps bianca. Slapping Bianca makes Katherine feel superior. In the film Kat and Bianca fight. Kat stands at the top of the stairs and Bianca stands at the bottom of the stairs pleading with Kat.Gil Jungers team uses a low angle shot of Kat to show she feels superior. In the play Lucentio falls in love with Bianca at first sight. He says “ I Brun, I Pine, I Perish Tranio”. Lucentio pretends to be a tutor so he can get closer to Bianca. In the film Cameron is a new student and falls in love with Bianca as soon as he sees her. He says “ I burn, i Pine I Perish”. Cameron pretends to be a tutor so he can get closer to Bianca. In the play “Taming of the shrew” Petruchio arrives in Padua and sees Katerina for the first time. Petruchio Decides that he wants her drowsy even though she is a “shrew”.He has a plan to tame her by using abuse methods. In 10 Things I Hate About You Patrick gets hired by Cameron to date Kat even though she is a Difficult person. Both characters are dating her for money. One of his techniques is taking her on a wild ride. Another example is in the play Bianca and Katherine fight and Katherine slaps bianca. Slapping Bianca makes Katherine feel superior.
