Egyptian proverbs have stated, “If you marry a monkey for his wealth, the money goes, but the monkey remains as is.” Meaning that money does not buy happiness. You love someone because of the way they treat you, the memories built together, their personalities, their values, and morals; that will guarantee a happier and longer-lasting marriage. If you marry for money, without being in love, money can one day be gone and you are left with the wrong person. The quote correlates to the character, Petruchio in Shakespeare's play, “The Taming of the Shrew” because he visited Padua to find a wealthy wife. Once he heard about the Minoila family and Katherine he decided he was going to marry her to benefit financially. The film, 10 Things …show more content…

In the film, Kat and Patrick overcome many obstacles that eventually make them a strong and loving couple, however, in the play, Petruchio marries Katherine, due to her wealth instead of feeling love and passion towards his wife. In the play, the Taming of the Shrew, Petruchio is depicted as a man who is emotionless by only looking for money from a woman. On the other hand, Katherine believes that she does not need a man to make her happy and neglects the idea of marriage, yet she does not like the idea of dying alone; “She is your treasure, she must have a husband; I must dance bare-foot on her wedding-day, And for your love to her lead apes in hell”. (Shakespeare II. i. 35-37). Meaning that in the afterlife, if she does not find a husband, then she will eternally be sexually punished. Inferring from this quote, although she wants to be independent, she does not want to be punished for it. In the film, 10 Things I Hate About You, Kat and Patrick are described as two people who are known to have a bad and mean reputation in school. Although Patrick began talking to Kat in the beginning because he received money from Joey, he grew to love her; “ Patrick: Some asshole paid me to take out this great girl.
