Similarities Between The European Union And The United States

As developed bodies of multiple states, the European Union and the United States, although in different hemispheres of our world share many of the same features such as origins, purposes, and governance systems. These two entities took form in different times in history but were ultimately both provoked by external threats. Their goals and purposes are not completely similar but follow a similar framework of unification, peace, and freedom. Lastly, their governance systems separate power and allot it to certain individuals and groups maintaining a balance in central and state powers. Within the varying similarities, there are also many differences between the European Union and the United States that distinguish the United States as a country and the European Union as a governmental organization.

However, when looking at freedom, peace, and unification as some of the core principles for the start of these two entities, the United States began due to external threats that diminished their freedoms from Great Britain. The European Union commenced due to external threats that were less severe but were developed with time following WWII in hopes of bringing Europe together after the turmoil that initially separated them. This unification began in 1943 that aimed to unify European Countries and rebuild western Europe. Their hopes were to foster a space with democratic ideals in Western Europe, in response to the communist Soviet Union that challenged democratic ideals. Following WWII, the Soviet Union was a major threat to the freedom of many in the eyes of democratic nations.
