Similarities Between To Kill A Mockingbird And The Help

To Kill A Mockingbird is set in Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930’s. The Help is set in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960’s. Although the two stories are set thirty years apart, their are many similarities between the two of them. In To Kill A Mockingbird, African Americans had close to no say in society. Because the Jim Crow laws were still in play in the 1930’s, blacks were very much limited in what they could do. The Jim Crow laws were rules enacted by Southern states and municipalities that legalized segregation between blacks and whites. An example would be making people with dark skin use a different restroom or water fountain than someone with white skin. By 1954, these laws had ceased, so during the time period that The Help was set in, they would no longer be in play. This does not mean that racism was gone, though, because there were still many racial incidents. Racism was not dead. I do not believe that racism is completely gone today yet either. We still have blacks killing whites because they’re white, and we still have whites killing blacks because they’re black. It doesn’t making any sense to me. I do not believe this is true, although that may make me sound hypocritical. I will explain: There is a difference in tolerance and acceptance. Acceptance is being okay with something, consenting to let it happen. Tolerance is enduring and putting up with someone or something, even if you don’t agree with it. You can not be okay with something, but be tolerant enough to not discriminate against someone else. An example of this for me would be homosexuality. I do not think that it is okay, and I absolutely do not consent to it, but if I come across a gay person, I tolerate them. I do not curse at, hate, or discriminate them, I just disagree with that part of their lifestyle. Many people think that you can’t respectfully disagree. Why
