In the Lord of the Flies, there was a continuous and taunting chant the boys on the island would say “Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!” (Golding 154). This chant has been a prime example of how the boys society had a downfall when they arrived on the island. All the british choir boys had started off, pure and innocent looking for a way to survive on the island that they crashed landed on. They ended becoming savage, hunting, and killing to get their point across. But, devolution of boys’ society was highly affected by Simon, Jack, and Roger for they had lost their innocence while stuck upon the island. Throughout the Lord of the Flies Simon at first was the boy that understood or was the problem solver out of the group. He would find the reasons why certain things would happen, and along the way after getting a fever. After hearing about so-called beast lurking along the island, Simon goes off into the woods and finds the ‘lord of the flies’. Which turns out to be a decomposing pig’s head on a stake. He had this conspiracy in his head: ‘must have meat’. They must hunt to kill to eat meat, and their chant to hunt always hyped them up. “Kill the pig! Cut his throat! Kill the pig! Bash him in!” (Golding, 114). But, that’s just the starter to losing his innocence, Jack truly loses his innocence when he starts living behind his façade or mask. “He capered toward BIll, and the mask was a thing on its own, behind which Jack hid, liberated from shame and self-consciousness. The face of red and white and black swung through the air and jigged toward Bill” (Golding 64). With Jack’s new mask on play, he believes that he can do or say anything.
