The Sinaloa Cartel is currently considered a transnational criminal organization that has a reach far beyond their local area of operations in Mexico. The Sinaloa Cartel has operations throughout the globe and are currently suspected to have active operations in over 52 countries world-wide and because of this they are considered one of the most infamous cartels known world-wide. There are not many years, months or even weeks that can go by without the Sinaloa Cartel making international headlines. Some may argue that the Sinaloa Cartel does not qualify as a terrorist organization because they do not fall into a specific category or because they are not necessarily operating to reach some sort of political or social agenda. There still has not been a single or universally adopted definition of terrorism by all United States law enforcement agencies or the Department of Defense, let alone nations world-wide. Mexico is a struggling second-world country, so economic sanctions would devastate its already struggling economy. Imposing trade sanctions would limit Mexico’s exports and restrict its imports. Secondly, economic sanctions would be used to impede its financing, to include its financial aid. The diplomatic avenue continues as the United States needs to flex its diplomatic muscles to convince the worlds superpowers to wage war on the cartels as well. Similarly, to how the United States convinced its NATO allies to participate and support its global war on terrorism.
