In the op-ed piece “A Change of Heart about Animals”, Jeremy Rifkin emphasizes the similarities between humans and animals by providing results on scientific research studies to illustrate that humans should be more empathetic towards animals. Although the given argument seems complete there are many unstated assumptions made by the author in his/her argument , which need to be addressed. Some of thses assumptions are considered below. Firstly, the author makes an analogy between the two towns, Ocean View and Hopewell.

In the preceding argument we find that the president of Grove College argues that adopting coeducation to the all-female college will increase the number of applications and enrollments to the college. However, the director opposes this view by saying that being an all-female education upholds the identity of the college. While both arguments may seem valid at first glance, upon scrutiny we can find that they are poorly reasoned and based on several questionable assumptions. Hence, We need more information regarding the college to support both claims. To begin with, the president assumes that increase in the number of application and enrollments in other colleges after adopting coeducation will likely be the case in Grove College.
So my issue with Peter Singer's argument is it's infallible to tell someone that they should not be spending money on luxuries, when they themselves are buying tickets to see a movie. I believe in "practice what you preach" and "actions speak louder than words". Which really puts me off about what Singer was trying to communicate. Now I understand his thoughts of trying to challenge people to not be selfish and think inwardly. But in that process, he himself fell prey to his own vices.

While pointing out that it is much easier to ignore an appeal for money to help those you’ll never meet than to consign a child to death, Singer uses his utilitarian philosophy to deflect the argument, stating that “if the upshot of the American’s failure to donate the money is that one more kid dies… then it is, in some sense, just as bad as selling the kid to the organ peddlers.” This argument, however, can only be made while using false dilemmas. Singer also addresses a large criticism of his work, that one can’t decide moral issues by taking opinion polls. The argument to this reiterates how the audience would feel being in these situations. This argument is poor as it does not address how the entire article is based on how everyone feels about this particular subject.
During his illustration of his principle, his definition of morality seems to be unstable and ambiguity increases with phrases like “moral difference”, “moral significance”, “moral autonomy”. It is likely that when it comes to significant difference between his principle and traditional values, he tends to use morality to confuse readers and make his statements more mysterious, more highly standardized and in a way, more likely to be trustable because we tend to believe in what we do not fully understand even confusingly. Another ambiguity arises from the exact phrase in the main contention, “same moral significance”, Singer explain it as “not to promote what is good”, it raises another problem that what the distinction between good and bad is and it always remains a debatable
In this day and age it is impossible to engage on social media, without being witness to, or involved in an argument. Following the largest mass shooting in our countries history this past weekend, I deliberately engaged in several arguments. Admittedly most of those arguments were driven out of emotion, rather than reason or even facts. Occasionally, the dialog would glean pearls of wisdom and new information steeped in data that made sense, swaying ones conventional wisdom about a topic. In general, assessing whether an argument is a good one based on subtle changes in how you feel about a topic is accurate but in reality the argument lacks true components of an academic argument.

Fighting for the heart of someone she does not know is terrifying to America Singer and this is the exact reason why she has no desire to compete in the Selection. America is fighting against her mother’s wishes, which she does not agree with, the other Selected, and most importantly, herself. When the book begins to finish, America begins to realize that she needs to choose between Aspen or Prince Maxon; she has been fighting with her feelings of these two men when she concludes that she cannot choose between them. As you know, in the last couple of months I have been working on the wrongness of killing and the replaceability argument. After some thought, I decided I will accept the utilitarian arguments against killing (although this is clearly one of the weakest points of utilitarianism) and just focus on the replaceability argument, as it is the primary topic of my thesis. At first, I began to focus on Singer 's treatment of infanticide and the killing of animals. Both are considered replaceable, but, I believe, there are some inconsistencies. However, I have come to the conclusion that these are not major, and therefore, I will not use them as my main focus of interest.
