Frederick Douglass throws light on the American slave system by writing about his view of slaveholders, the conditions of slavery, and how he escaped. He explained his experience with slaveholders when he states, “He was cruel enough to inflict the severest punishment, artful enough to descend to the lowest trickery, and obdurate enough to be insensible to the voice of a reproving conscience.” (Page 32) This displays the fact that most slaveholders in the south were cruel and inhumane. Frederick Douglass shows the condition slaves had to go through, when he states,”I suffered much from hunger but much more from cold.

The Civil War, which began in 1861, had the American states divided into 2 parts, and pitted against one another in the name of slavery. Accounts of slavery have viewed the situation as “wicked, cruel, and unjust” (John Brown). However, this view, at the time, was controversial at best, due to the overwhelming fact that the south was in favor of slavery, and the north was appalled by tit. Slavery was their main source of labor in their area that relied on agriculture for production and sustaining financial wealth. The north had mostly factories and industries, and did not require as much manual labor, hence the idea of opposition at the time.

Slave Struggles in the American South In the American South, slaves struggled with how they were treated and how their families got split apart and broken Slaves got chased and beaten, by their owners. They were mistreated and teased for their race. Slaves weren’t aloud to go to school and learn. Physical pain was a part of daily life for slaves. They got mistreated for the work that they gave, and deserved a better life.
From this, derives a bond with the reader that pushes their understanding of the evil nature of slavery that society deemed appropriate therefore enhancing their understanding of history. While only glossed over in most classroom settings of the twenty-first century, students often neglect the sad but true reality that the backbone of slavery, was the dehumanization of an entire race of people. To create a group of individuals known for their extreme oppression derived from slavery, required plantation owner’s of the South to constantly embedded certain values into the lives of their slaves. Abraham Lincoln once said, “Those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not for themselves.” During this time when Lincoln was president the Civil War was occurring. He is saying that the people in the United States who believe in slavery and no freedom for African Americans; shouldn’t be free. This is a wonderful quote by Lincoln, showing that slavery is wrong and everyone should have freedom. Slavery was an important time during the making of America.
The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass takes the reader through Douglass’s life during, and after his brute path with slavery. Douglass’s autobiography gives insight on the multitude of ways in which African American’s suffered under the bondage of slavery in the south. Within the page, Douglass intertwines his thoughts on religion, education, and freedom with those of the hardship, pain, and hopelessness that drove him into the abolition figure that he is today. The narrative begins with showing the “dehumanizing character of slavery,” (53) and how it placed physical and emotional shackles on the lives of colored people in the 1800s.
Have you ever wondered how life was for the slaves in the South? Slaves in the South suffered through many consequences. For example, they suffered through many whippings with cow skin if they didn't obey their master, they also got separated from their family mostly the fathers, so, they can be sold to a very mean slave owner. Even if they were living a miserable life on the farms, they had their own culture and they managed to even get married in the farmland or where they worked. Not only did the slaves live on the farm.
Slavery in The Civil War The American civil war from 1861 to 1865 divided many people in the United States, even turning brother against brother. There were also great amounts of bloodshed and was one of the bloodiest wars in the US and left a heritage of brief and bitterness. And the basis of this war, slavery, slavery is usually very cruel and has been around since early man. Their were two sides to this war, the North and the south.
