For many years leading to the Civil War slavery has been an ongoing argument between the North and the South. Both regions have their own arguments for either side of their cases. The North was strongly against the idea of enslaving human beings while the South saw the advantages of owning slaves. James Henry Hammond demonstrates that slaves are less beneficial to the economy because they cost more than free labor, although he does contradict himself, Hinton Rowan continues to explain the North demand for southern merchandise.
This helped out the union a lot because the soldiers of the union could eat the farm food that the farms of the north planted. Unlike in the south were all the farmers made cotton but soldiers couldn’t eat cotton so cotton didn’t help soldiers in battle, instead of farm food the confederacy made cotton and not very much farm food so the confederate army was starving. At the battle of Vicksburg Ulysses s Grant told the union army to continue a siege on the town of Vicksburg. During this battle the confederate army was hungry because the union army cut off all supplies of food from coming into Vicksburg. Well the soldiers had to eat so they ate bark off of trees and undigested corn in horse

Using tariffs would create more products and distribute more. The U.S. price would be lower than Europe including the tariff so it made more money for the Americans in the north. In the South, they did not believe in using factories (Since their land is good for farming and agriculture, that was their method.) The tariff that helped the North made the South suffer so they were already upset at the North and the federal government. The South mostly made cash crops, but during this time period, the most prosperous was cotton.
However, the South didn’t believe that the slaves would become disobedient and test their limits with the few white men who guarded them. Numerous slaves began to plot on the whites and also escape slavery by hiding behind the North. Slavery was a disadvantage for the South. A sound military because the North had to conquer land, but also continue to conquer more land and this meant they would have to leave soldiers behind. Moreover, this would weaken the North’s army because they had to leave soldiers behind not to mention those who were injured or died in combat.
Without the resources Southern war needs could not be met. Such as clothing, food, and shelter. Also, the south lost their home court advantage when they couldn’t rely on the thousands of African Americans they slaved. They didn’t have nationalism and they lacked full civilian support.
On the other hand, the Southern relied on the slavery. The Northern wanted to have more free labors and they were against the slavery completely. The Southern was more in favor of the slavery. Therefore, the Union kept
Slavery helped the masters save money on labors. All the generations were belongs to the masters, and they had the rights to sell the slaves to earn money. The South also wanted to spread the slavery to the West. The North needed cheap labors to help industrialize the North, but they would not like to have slaves to help them. Slavery could help improve the productivity of the plantations, most likely a master had many slaves, and the masters did not need to pay the salves to work for them.
To a greater extent, slavery was the greatest cause of the outbreak of the civil war in 1860. Disputes of slavery caused economic and political troubles between the northern and southern states leading up to the civil war. The fact the the northern and southern states were different in almost every way caused them to turn out like completely different territories, one of their greatest differences was the fact that most southern states economy relied on hard labour, agricultural jobs like tobacco in Maryland, and cotton in Virginia; this caused their economy to be more based on the labour of slaves than the more developed territories in the north (Harrold), who after this time was starting to not need the slave labour in their territories because after early 1800’s, the industrial revolution had been spreading to America, and the country developed very quickly. But in this expansion, only the north states were getting the effect of the industrial revolution, meaning the north would not need slave

The Civil War was necessary to resolve the escalating tensions between Northerners and Southerners regarding slavery. To Southerners, slavery was essential to their agricultural economy and way of life. The North was industrialized and did not need slavery to support their economy. Since the regions had different views on slavery, compromises and fighting occurred to try to solve the issues which slavery brought up. Tensions over slavery began to grow when the country started expanding West because the North and the South wanted their personal beliefs to be spread West.
