In John Steinbeck’s book Of Mice and Men, there is a well respected man named Slim. Everybody likes Slim, but I think he is spoken of too highly. He may be skilled at everything he does, but he still works on a ranch making less than other skilled workers at the time. Slim is like the Marlboro Man. He’s cool, but he only does a few things that make him cool. On page 33 Steinbeck paints a brilliant picture of slim using vivid description. He did not do that for any other character in the story. Steinbeck could have made any of the other guys special like Slim had he described them like Slim. In other words, he’s overrated.
