Our next discussion post involves locating a publicly traded company. I chose that opportunity to search for shoe companies that are publicly traded; my favorite for retail therapy. It was surprising to learn that my “go to” shoe store is one of these companies; DSW, Inc. (Designer Shoe Warehouse, Inc.). DSW is listed as a “small-cap” stock company. Investopedia (Internet, 11/02/17) defines companies that have “small-cap stocks” as having “a market capitalization over 300 million and under two billion dollars.” The stock prices are high and available shares are small; which is why large investors fail to capitalize on purchasing these types of shares. More than likely, they are looking for companies that have a guaranteed rate of return. There are proven instances, wherein some “small-cap” stock companies have been able to exceed their profits. In July 1991, DSW opened its first retail store in Dublin, Ohio. They currently have over 500 stores in operation, worldwide. They operate under what they describe as “core values of passion, accountability, humility, and collaboration.” According to CEO Roger Rawlins, DSW’s sustainability and responsibility statement, also known as their brand mission statement is, “We inspire self-expression” – “music for your feet”. …show more content…
