My Thoughts On The book “So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed” In class we have discussed several potential themes of So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed, and although its debatable on what the ultimate message may be. Personally, I feel the strongest message in this book is that our society has made shaming as a form of social control, and that publicly shaming is okay because its become such a frequent thing it's almost normal. A British Journalist Jon Ronson shows throughout the book that in the general public with the media such as Tv, Twitter, etc ; These technological sources make public shaming much easier, because you get to hide behind a screen. Moynihan who had a wife and daughter. He had a hard time making ends meet as a journalist. He needed to publish something soon worthy of being published because his career was just in a rut, thats when he seeked Jonah Lehrer a writer for the New York times magazine as his victim. Emailing him asking questions which lead to meeting when soon enough Micheal got all the information he needed on Jonah. Jonah had whomped up Dylan’s quotes in a book. When Micheal had let this claim to be public after Jonah calling numerous times pleading not to do it and his doings anyway lead to Jonah career less ruining his life. I think Jonah had learned his lesson a while ago but yet people kept dragging it out and wouldn't stop because while he was talking on stage and saying he was sorry pleading for a second chance a giant screen was displayed behind him of a live twitter feed. On this feed right behind him was comments like “Jonah Lehrer boring people into forgiving himself for plagiarism” or “ I am not feeling terribly convinced by the deadpan mea culpa droning on by @JonahLehrer”. (Ronson 46). I think not only was this mans life ruined, he lost his job had nothing left and coming to say publicly he was sorry being humiliated saying he was wrong. This accident was drug on way to far for way to long but it was peoples way of social control and humiliation. These things that cost people their jobs and lives everyday that was need to be aware of. Another example in the book is when Justine Sacco had posted on her twitter “ Weird German Dude: You’re in first class. Its 2014. Get some deodorant.- Inner monolog as I inhale BO. Thank god for pharmaceuticals.” Then the layover at Heathrow: “ Chili- cucumber sandwiches -bad teeth. Back in London!” Then the final leg: “ Going to Africa. I hope I don't get AIDS. Just kidding.
