When one looks back in our history, we have always thought that everyone suffered after the Civil War. The Civil War after all was extremely destructive to anything and anyone involved. However, Robert Tracy McKenzie did not believe that everyone suffered a great deal. In fact, in his article, “Civil War and Socioeconomic Change in the Upper South: The Survival of Local Agricultural Elites in Tennessee, 1850-1870,” he discussed how the top five percent of the elite farmers were still prosperous. McKenzie’s article focuses on all three regions in Tennessee, but only a few select counties.
Losing such a valuable thing hurt the South. Because of the destruction of cities, railroads, riverboats, cotton gins, and livestock, many businesses went bankrupt. The overall cost of war was terrible for the South and the North. Before the civil war the national debt was sixty-five million dollars.
There are our four main reasons why the economy of the South became so bad during the Civil War. One reason was present even before the war because the North had been very strong industrial and transportation businesses while the South lacked in that same category due to the focus of plantations and slavery. The second reason why the economy was weak was because during the war, the battles were mostly faught in the South leaving areas of land destroyed such as plantations. The plantations were apart of how the South made money therefore once some plantations were gone then money from those plantations were also gone. A third reason why the economy of the South became bad during the Civil War was because of the Union blockade of Southern ports.
The Civil War in 1865 and Reconstruction in 1865-1877 is the reason for peace and good relations with other states. In other words, it typically brought America together, and that is key for a good nation. The effects the Civil War had on the U.S becoming a nation was significantly dramatic. This includes when the two regions that were having slavery at the time, causing a bad perspective on the U.S., the Civil War had put an end to that slavery. Over 3 million of slaves have finally gotten their freedom.
Following the Civil War, more than two percent of America’s population was lost. Between 1800 and 1860, there were a number of economic, political, and social factors that had contributed to the Civil War. The North was more economically stable with the idea of manufacturing, while the South was focused on agriculture and slavery. Politically, compromises and multiple acts created to end arguments were starting to quickly diminish. The North and South were constantly in competition with each other for more power in the House of Representatives.
For these reasons and many more the North was the real winner of the civil war. Economy, something that is knowing to go up and down all the time. In most situations people would expect war to stress the economy or destroy it. This was not the case for the North. The North’s economy did better during the war.
The Civil War was one of the most devastating wars in American history. It was fought between the North and the South over Slavery. It impacted both the South and the North’s economy. Many people died trying to re-unite the country over slavery, “over 620,000 people died in the Civil War” (Riggs 2 ). This proved that the war not only affected the country and the economy; it also affected the people as well.
After the Civil War, the United States had two distinct economies, which is quite significant. The Southern economy was completely damaged by the results of the Civil War. Southerners were forced to readjust their entire economy, because slaves needed to be liberated, leaving slave-owners with no workforce. Meanwhile, in the North, the need to supply Union armies with particularly daily supplies marked the start of an era of industrial development. Which giant corporations essentially emerged known as Big Business.
There are many things that impacted both the South and the North after the Civil War in 1865. Which brought in new challenges and many different changes through the newly formed country after the civil war through industrialization that helped form what we call the United States today. Three major aspects of industrialization that had a big effect of society, economy and politics in the formative years of 1865 to 1920 were that of technology, expansion of transportation and immigration. In regard to technology it was ever-evolving in advancement of new and innovated ways that helped moving forward the industrialization of the newly forming United States during this time period. Also, the creation of “new inventions that saved time and money in innovation drove the industrial
The Civil War was a rollercoaster ride of events leading up to the Northern victory. In the beginning, one might think in favor of the South because of exceptional general leadership over the North. But, many were soon to find out that their predictions were most inaccurate, for the North had more willing soldiers to fight for what they believed in. During the war the North’s advantages soon became eminent, through food and soldiers. The North was much larger than the South; growing far more crops, for meals and rations given to the military to help them survive.
Also the Civil War taught many people and families that a war is not the way to go because of so many deaths caused by them. They found new ways to solve problems other than fighting. After the war ended , the south had no slavery and they had to start new businesses. They started to
The Civil War changed the way that many of the people in this country view race. The war also vastly affected the government and the unity of the United States. This would ultimately be the largest and most expensive, monetary wise and mortality wise, war that the United States had ever seen. The United States would be changed forever because of this new war of age old issues.
They were affected by the war after suffering from the shortage of cotton that grew in the south. This shortage caused unemployment or reduced work hours to grow. Europe backed away and refused to recognize the CSA once the news of the Emancipation Proclamation came to them because although England and France needed the South for their cotton, they both have abolished slavery, and the citizens would not have agreed to the decision of supporting the Confederates. The battle also lifted the morale of the Union. Before the battle, the Union had low hopes of defeating the Confederacy after losing to them so much.
The american civil war was an internal conflict fought in the united states from 1861 to 1865. The Union faced secessionists in eleven Southern states grouped together as the Confederate States of America. Abraham lincoln was one of the commanders during the civil war. Some of the advantages for the north are that they had almost 4 times as many free citizens, they had many people to grow food and to work in factories making supplies, they had more than 70% of the nation's rail lines, they had a strong navy and a large fleet of private trading ships. Some of the disadvantages for the north are that the northern soldiers had to conquer a huge area to bring the south back into the union, they were invading unfamiliar land.
The economic impact of the war as is true in most if not all cases of war are that the spoils of war are the reward of the victors. The South was already in a weaker position in the industrial strength of its geographical coalition that it was amazing that they were as close to actually succeeding in their mission. They lacked the ability to replenish their troops with guns and ammunition and in many cases had to gather this gear from failed Confederate and Union soldiers. While in the north with a large population and a more sustained economy they were to accomplish the
