The lecture, led by Dr. Christian Dimaano, discussed a variety of health disparities and then went into an in depth look at Henrietta Lacks, and the use of her cells in scientific research. He described health disparities as the differences of health problems between races, lifestyles, and mental processes. This was a very interesting topic for me, as a nursing major, I hadn’t really thought about health disparities before, so it was interesting to think about all of the potentially higher health risks that can occur simply because a patients race, or mental state. He also discussed the social determinants of heath and how things like your physical environment, economic stability, social community, and education can all influence your health. Dr. Dimaano also talked about how social determinants of health are health problems that you had no choice in, they are developed by factors such as sex, age, genes, medical care, and individual behaviors such as work and home life.
Health inequalities, task 2: In this essay I will provide sociological analysis of the underlying reasons for the differences in health and provide explanations and reasons of health inequalities. According to the map/graph (I provided), there are variations in health status according to social class, gender and geographical region in the UK. For example, the number of premature death are much higher in Scotland then elsewhere, for both men and women.

Heath and Low Socioeconomic Status Class When examining the health status of Canadians, one may not recognize the flaws of inequality. When looked into further is it evident that not all Canadians are on equal playing fields when it comes to access of health. The concept of social determinant of health, taps into the idea that there are social barriers and obstacle in our society that present challenges for certain social groups and their access to health care. One group of Canadians who experience the effects of inequality in our health care system, are those individuals living in lower socioeconomic status.
This module addressed environmental issues that contribute to health, including overpopulation, consumerism, and wealth inequalities. People of all classes are affected by this issue in different ways; for example, the poor experience limited availability of healthy foods, and the rich consume a lot of resources. My favorite class activity was coming up with mental models related to the video “Wealth Inequality in America,” because it gave me insight on how the poor eat unhealthily based on circumstances that may be out of their control, not necessarily from personal choice as many people commonly assume. This health topic is a problem because the people in the most industrialized countries consume so much more resources that they don’t actually
Health disparity are avertible health status of distinctive group of people like races, skin color, language, socioeconomic resources, gender and age (Edelman, Kudzma, & Mandle, 2014). Health disparities are arbitrary and explicit to historical and present uneven distribution of political, economic, social, and environmental resources. A disparity can also be related to education, where dropping out of school occurs associated with various social and health problems (CDC,2017). Comprehensively, person with inadequate education are more likely to struggle number of health risks such as substance abuse, obesity, and traumatic injuries, compared to individual who receive more education. One of the main findings within health disparities in history

People are usually born into wealth or poverty. They need different work ethics in order to provide for themselves and their families. The resources that the upper class gets are very different than what the lower class gets. Often times, the wealthy are favored because they have all the money. The people who favor them realize the economy depends on them.
The term social determinants of health, can be defined as a ‘set of conditions in which people are born, grow up, live and work.’ These conditions include housing, education, financial security and the environment along with the healthcare service. (http://www.rcn.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0007/438838/01.12_Health_inequalities_and_the_social_determinants_of_health.pdf) These factors are affected by the amount of money, power and resources that are available at a global, national and local level. Social determinants of health are linked to health inequalities according to the World Health Organisation, health inequalities are ‘the unfair and avoidable differences in health status seen within and between countries.’
What factors do you think contribute to the disparities in health among ethnic, socioeconomic, and gender groups in your country? Back to my country, Indonesia, it has more than 14 thousand islands scatter within 5 thousand miles from East to West in South East Asian region. There are tremendous disparities between islands to other islands in health due to ability to access to health facilities; poor; low education; and area isolation. As described by Crimmins, Hayward and Seeman (2004) that poorer and less education people will likely to suffer from diseases. Poorer people always experience with cognitively and physically impaired.
Social Class is defined as “a category of people with approximately similar incomes and occupations who have similar lifestyles,” (Marger 2014:409). Historically, social class has been debated in abundance because it plays a role in social stratification and inequality. Many factors including moving, education, occupation and gender affect social class and social mobility. MOBILITY Most Americans identify themselves as middle class even though only a fraction of families are actually considered middle class.
Today, most developed countries have a system in place to make sure the consequences of its class system are not too extreme. However, for a country to be successful, having a class system that determines a one’s quality of life is necessary. No matter when or where, there will always be a social ranking which determines the quality of someone’s
The movie I have chosen to review is The Help. The Help illustrates social class and inequality. After watching this movie, it was even more strongly portrayed to me how wrongly African Americans were treated in the early 1960’s and why The Civil Rights Movement was so important to our society. My knowledge of the treatment of African Americans is pretty broad, however, seeing it in movie form, it was reiterated on a larger scale. This movie also showed how members of a different social class were treated as though they weren’t as good as their fellow humans.
Health inequalities are preventable and unjust differences in health status experienced by certain population groups. People in lower socio-economic groups are more likely to experience chronic ill-health and die earlier than those who are more advantaged. Health inequalities are not only apparent between people of different socio-economic groups – they exist between different genders and different ethnic groups (“Health inequalities,” n.d.). The situation in which people are born, grow, develop, work and age are affected by social, economic, environmental and most importantly political factors.
The hierarchy is divided into categories of upper, middle and lower class. These categories can be sub-divided into more groups, for example lower- middle class, etc. An individual’s socioeconomic status can depend on many different combinations of income, education, rank, race and ethnicity, and more. Everything related to socioeconomic status can be strongly related to an individual’s health and there have been many studies comparing these two.
