These people that were killed were accused of witchcraft. Witchcraft is the belief in powers and that you can do magical things like witches. People thought that witchcraft is evil and that is why many people got thrown in jail or killed after being accused. They even killed two dogs during the trials. They got this belief by believing the devil gave certain powers to people to become witches.
Telling fortunes, showing peoples faces in glasses, enchantments, and healing the sick are some of the things people who practiced witchcraft claimed to be able to do. New Englanders often turned to people who could do these things for favors and referred to them as "cunning folk" (pg.107). The New Englanders didn't see any harm in using their occult powers for there own good, when in fact these people were in contact with the devil. They did not see it that way but they were indeed risking being banished to hell.
The main person that I believe that did witchcraft is Tituba because most of the people in the village knows that she can call the Devil. Mrs.Putnam said “Tituba knows how to speak to the dead, Mr.Parris” (Miller 1266). And in the story many people bring up that Tituba can speak to the dead and to the Devil. Mr.Parris saw them dancing in the woods, also Abigail admitted that they did danced in the woods like witches do during that time. Abigail said “Now look you!
The young girls dancing in the forest, both forbidden, made people worry of witchcraft almost instantaneously(Wiggins, 2012). Young girls were allowed dolls, but they were to be faceless with little or no clothing. It was seen as suspicious if the adult women of the community still had dolls of their own. Mary Warren made Elizabeth Proctor a doll as a gift, which was later seen as some kind of voodoo doll(Wiggins, 2012). The citizens of the community were to live as the Bible taught them, and nothing
They were fearful people and believed that witches, servants of the devil, were real and dangerous. (miller,1124-1128) Many colonists attributed their misfortunes to the power of evil.(miller,1124-1128) Many of the guilty were accused only of practicing folk customs. (miller,1124-1128)
Also, the information given in this story has no hard evidence. Only the number of people who were hanged for being accused of witchcraft. This quote shows that the believe in witchcraft was
The town people started being afraid of witches (Miller, 1129). The witchcraft the young girls were performing, started to cause a major problem in the town (Miller, 1132). The problem was that innocent people were being blamed for things that they did not do, and also caused a lot of deaths (Miller,
Like being gay, being a witch was considered a major crime. People thought that if you were a witch you were unholy and you needed to be saved by Christ. People still had the same sort of problem in the rebellion. The stonewall and the Human Rights Society for human rights was shut down by the police. In salem if you did not confess to being a witch you were shut down also by execution.
These people were accused because they thought their problems would be solved by simply executing the people who seemed suspicious to them. In the Bible it talks about how powerful this can be and staying away from it is best. People feared witches and the calamity they could bring. The fear of witchcraft prompted the colonist to fight against the
There were consequences for practicing witchcraft that ranged from whipping to death. Abbigail was later accused but to get out of punishment she said this: “I want to open myself! . . . I want the light of God, I want the sweet love of Jesus! I danced for the Devil; I saw him, I wrote in his book; I go back to Jesus; I kiss His hand. I saw Sarah Good with the Devil!
The thing that stands out when reading the stories of Beowulf, Sir Gawain, and the Canterbury Tales is that the writers use Christianity to show conflicts in human nature. Also with these stories taking place in different times with writers who have different opinions about Christianity and how it has influences Society. For example, in Beowulf, the writer chooses to mash up the ideas of Christianity and paganism because during the time that the writer was transcribing the story there were missionaries trying to convert the Anglo-Saxons that lived in Britain, so the missionaries used Beowulf as a way to reach the pagans. This is also been done to other stories like in the Viking legend Thor god of thunder where at the end of the story the world
The people believed that the word of God was the only way of life and needed to be followed. They believed that the witches were trying to “breakdown God.” Any person who was accused of being a witch was first checked to see if they had the devils mark and if they did they would poke it with a needle and if they showed pain or drew blood then it wasn’t considered the devil’s mark. They were put on trial but no one ever wanted to stand up for the witches because if you did then you would then get interrogated and people then thought you were a witch also. Many people believe that things are good how they are but they don’t realize how much more needs to still be done.
The feelings towards women as a whole at this time were extreme prejudice and cruelty, as their job at this time was to have children and tend the house. In this modern era women have rights and can do anything they want to, but still face oppression but nowhere near the acts of the Salem witch
Churchianity is the emphasis on the church as an institution, the church is to serve itself, it should offer a place of worship, there should be new political and cultural order. This focuses on social purity, temperance, and pietism as a form of worship i.e the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. Churchianity represented a stark contrast to the rise of what was called social Christianity. Social Christianity saw churches as an outdated social order, and their practices no longer useful. It tended to focus more on the interpretation of the bible and scripture, and less on literal interpretation like Churchianity.
My Conversion Testimony When I was young, I attend church with my neighbors and friends. When I became a teenager, my parents made me go to church. I loved church so I did not have a problem going, but I did not know the reason for attending church. I did not have a personal relationship with Jesus. After I became a young adult, I started partying and I did not want to go to church.
