The first theory used to explain gang behavior is social disorganization. In an earlier lecture, Professor Chamberlain (2016) defined social disorganization as the breakdown, or serious dilution, of the power of informal community rules to regulate conduct (p. 9). Professor Chamberlain (2016) discussed how Thrasher claimed that economic destabilization was a key aspect to social disorganization; this resulted in the collapse of conventional social organizations including schools, church, and family.
