1.1 Background Australia thrives on the ideas of ‘living the Australian dream’ and being able to have social mobility regardless of your current position in society. However, Australia is a capitalist society as many other western countries which have clear positions of inequality. We need inequality as it is inevitable as it plays too much in a functional society (Davis and Moore, 1945). This can be clearly shown through the use of a study of social groups and areas which people are located. The examples use come from suburban Brisbane areas as they have been identified as being socially stratified. Social stratification is a system by which societies have been placed into categories of people, factor may include the power, wealth and status that one may have to be placed in the hierarchy (Lenski,1984). Rating the scale of an occupation comes down to multiple requirements needed and what was regarded in the community as the talent required in that role (smith,1943). Davis and Moore also theorised the prestige which was attached to your positon within the community gave you more status among the social scale. This would lead to the skill that was acquired to obtain that occupation in society gave you more social prestige than others and as a results benefiting from the rewards in that position. Demonstrated by the occupation by a suburb, an Index five different Suburbs were placed into a ranking from most prestige to least.
