Social Inequality In Evelyn Perry's Riverwest, Ohio

There are many sources that express the importance of social and economic integration to further social equality, but Americans seem to have trouble conforming to living with differences. Whether that may be values, beliefs, religion, or race, we must get better if we want to improve equality. After reading Perry’s analysis of the ethnically and economically mixed neighborhood of Riverwest, Milwaukee, I now understand the importance of community. These residents manage to maintain their social stability while holding onto their diversity. Evelyn Perry very clearly shows she divulged herself into her work. She picked up her life and headed to Riverwest, where she lived for three years to study community interactions. In order to truly understand the community, Perry used a type of participant observation, specifically active participation. This means she became a member of Riverwest by embracing the customs and values held there, specifically their live and let live mentality. …show more content…

Evelyn Perry shows throughout the book it is because of the ‘live and let live’ way of life, also known as the ‘diversity is our strength’ fame of view. The logic behind this mantra is essentially, realizing that there are differences between residents, but not interfering with the way others live their lives, and expecting the same from them (Perry 2017, 64). One local resident who promotes this motto shares, “There are no conformists in this neighborhood. There is nothing to conform to. And that is sort of ideal for me.” (Perry 2017, 63) This quote represents the views of many locals in Riverwest, you get to be who you are without judgment. Many outsiders looking for diversity will come to live in Riverwest, making it an ideal location for those wanting more exposure to different cultures and lifestyles.
