" Immigration has been a common story on the news this past year. Some people don’t bother to give this topic a second thought; for me personally, this is one of the things that wracks my brain everyday. My family and I are immigrants and my dad has a work visa that allows us to live in this country legally. On October 18, 2017, President Trump established a policy that allows The Department of Homeland Security to monitor the social media accounts and internet search history of legal immigrants - including immigrant applicants, U.S. citizens, and lawful permanent residents. My family and I were born in Mexico; we had to move to the U.S. because my dad couldn’t find a decent job and the environment was getting more violent by the day. Moving to Texas was insane, we had to sell everything my parents had worked so hard to obtain and leave everything and everyone we knew for a foreign country, but we knew that this change would pay off, that we would be living the American dream at the end. The change wasn’t hard for me, a 9 year old kid clueless about the world; I have been living a better life than I would have growing up in Mexico, it’s been a blessing. But as I grow older I realize all the hardships that my parents have gone through, not financially wise like most other families, but about immigration. I have noticed that we don’t have the freedom all of my friends and peers have because we have to be cautious about what we say, and what we do, and what we like in social media. I realize that I cannot legally work when I’m older, that the things people take for granted like education, a home, financial security, and the freedom of speech are basically a privilege for us, and they can be easily taken away, and all because of the internet, a place where the government is free to spy on any
