Social Media Impact On Identity

The first video I ever watched was a music video by Demi Lovato called “Don’t Forget” where she shows herself as a girl who just broke up with her boyfriend. Throughout all the video she shows vulnerability and this impacted the way I listened to music because it gave a stronger significance to the lyrics. Most recently I seem to come across more videos about people sending a message. This message is most of the time told and delivered by the bloggers telling a personal experience and that seems to have a more impact on me. Different type of social media has had an impact on youths’ sexual identity. Youtube has been a great platform for youth to express their identity and share their stories. Report to Ladlad” (Soriano, 2014) by asking a question directly online there is a formation of a community where individuals around the world are allowed to communicate and exchanged their opinion, like McLuhan (2015) predicted the medium in what the context is said is more important than the context itself, this can be because social media is a big network that touches everywhere around the world in seconds in this way there is more involvement for everyone that logs online. For example, analyzing Tyler Oakley YouTube channel has more than 7 million followers which means that every video he shares is view by around 7 million people and all these individuals can integrate themselves to an online conversation. However, Soriano (2014) also mentions that there is still harassment and physical violence and users online also showed fear of harassment and isolation. For example, a user -Karmic Retribution- explain in a comment that he had to move out before he could come out as “bisexual” because his parents are “accepting of gays” and they think they should “burn in hell” the use of hate language is something that members of the LGBT community seem to experience but by having this “community” online individuals like Karmic have support. Kira Masha show support by commenting below and said: “stay strong”. Soriano (2014) agrees that by having a positive share space like YouTube makes people aware of the discrimination that there is still going on today and makes them take action in the matter which in this case is by creating more campaigns that support the LGBT
