Employers Use of Social Media to Hire Job Seekers
In the article “More than Half of Employers Now Use Social Media to Screen Job Candidates, Poll Says: Even Send Friend Requests” by Olivia Perkins, she talks about employers that use social media to hire job seekers. She gives information about things employers search for on a person’s social media account. She also gives tips to job seekers about how they should set their profiles to get hired. According to Olivia Perkins she says, “More than 60 percent of employers are looking for information that supports a job seeker’s qualifications for a job”. Most students that are seeking for a job do not think it is important when posting certain things on social media that is inappropriate. Some students think it makes them cool or popular when they post profanity and inappropriate pictures. Teri Root and Sandra McKay stated, “In a more recent student- oriented study, nearly 51% of respondents indicated that they were not aware that the employers or recruiters could view their profiles yet quite a few respondents (45.3%) believed that employers and recruiters looked at a job candidate profiles of all time”. Some job candidates do not think employers are even allowed to go stalk their social media accounts to find certain information based upon if they should be hired or not. Job candidates that do know they are being watched on social media may limit what they post. On most social media accounts a person can block certain people from viewing what they post. They could make posts with profanity or post pictures with drugs and alcohol and the employer may never see. The job candidate may not also add the employer as a friend. On social media accounts such as Facebook, if a person is not a friend you cannot see all the posts they post. Most students like posting pictures of drugs and alcohol. A person that does drugs and alcohol actions will show if they attend work intoxicated or under the influence of drugs.
