Social sustainability

Some authors have defined Social sustainability as follows:
“Social Sustainability occurs when the formal and informal processes; systems and structures and relationships actively support the capacity of current and future generations to create healthy and liveable communities. Socially sustainable communities are equitable, diverse, connected and democratic and provide a good quality of life”.
Explained in different words, a society that has reached social sustainability is one that understands what people need from the places and contexts they live and work, and apart from that is able to effectively provide infrastructure to support social life, systems for citizen and space for people and places to evolve. Besides, women have a very small participation in policy making bodies, such as parliament, cabinet, managerial and executive positions, etc. This can be interpreted in the following manner, as there are not sufficient female representatives it implies that women are not widely represented in their needs and concerns, or possible interpreted in different ways by females. They tend to abandon their jobs in order to raise their children meanwhile men are climbing to the top of their companies. Women have very different professional trajectories as men, and usually need to work flexible hours so as to accommodate all the demands on their time. The greatest problem for working women is the lack of adequate childcare. Some women do not have this benefit and sometimes they must take their children to their jobs, or simply quit their jobs. As a consequence, appropriate and affordable childcare needs to be set, to give women the opportunity to develop successfully in their professions and tasks.
