Making a change in the world, having a meaning and caring deeply, are just a few of the reasons I am drawn into the field of social work. Making an impact in just one person’s life is fulfilling to me. I want to help make things better, to help put ease to any suffering a person may be going through.
Qualifications that are very important when going into the social work field are of the many such as empathy, listening, self-awareness, boundary settings, organization, persuasion, communication, social perceptiveness, and being able to de-compress or relax. For the last three years, I have worked with children between the ages of 8 weeks all the way up until school age, as well as being the Lead teacher in the Preschool classroom for over a year now. I have seen children who come from upper-class, middle-class and lower-class families, children who have been adopted, divorced families, bi-racial families, same sex families, or children who are in the foster care system, families who are struggling, families who are doing their best to help these children become well-mannered, intelligent adults. I want to be able to make a difference in the world. Working with children is not the only experience that has impacted my interests and decision to follow the path into social work. I have grown up with a loving, family of five, but tragedy hit us when my brother made one bad decision to try narcotics for the first time. To work with families that are suffering through grief, confusion, and loss of hope. I want to look deeper into the differences and complexities, and dynamics of interconnected relationships. I want to gain knowledge of behavioral and mental illnesses, providing insight and hope to these people.
