I have the ability to engage in effective social work practice as I have been exposed to many settings which have provided me the groundwork build my competencies. I have been in a school setting to which I was providing individual and group therapy for students ages 5 through 18. I utilized cognitive behavioral therapy worksheets which are evidence-based and recognized the changes in some students. I ensured that the worksheets utilized were appropriate for whichever age group. During my time in the hospital setting, I built my skills in assessing client needs and coordinating with many community organizations for needed resources.
I have struggled to keep my school work a priority as I need to balance it with my part-time work and with the things I like to do to keep my life as normal as possible (like cheerleading and spending time with my friends). I am very honored and thankful to be the first the person in my family to attend college fall of 2016. As I strive to end my senior year positive, I always remember to tell my younger siblings to try as hard as they can in school, because “education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” I’ve decided that I would like to get my degree in social work, specifically working with children. Growing I’ve been around kids that are unhappy with thier home, but couldn’t do anything about it.
After completing my B.S in Community Human Services at Empire State College, I felt extremely fulfilled in my accomplishment. I felt like I did accomplish my ultimate goal which was becoming qualified to work with Juveniles in the system to help make a difference in their lives. I thought I could have been a unique asset to the system where I can be of assistance in problem solving alongside my affiliates and bosses working together in unison to accomplish the same goal, which is to be effective administrators to foster growth and productivity in the lives of the youths. However, I quickly learn or come to a realization that our children of tomorrow need more than just an attentive ear, a shoulder to lean on, and an empathetic individual. In
I began college in 2014 at the age of 58 years-old to change my area of employment and do something that is far more interesting to me, working within the social services field. I realize the fact I was brought up by two dysfunctional, abusive parents in a chaotic home lead me to search out that same type of familiar relationship when I left home at the age of seventeen. In short, I married a domestic violence abuser and alcoholic when I was 19 years-old and had 5 children. Ten years into the marriage, when I had finally reached the end of my rope, a local police officer helped me to obtain a Protection from Abuse order and removed my husband from the home. This era was the birth of the Protection from Abuse orders and for me and this new

Working for a call center for many years, before come back to school, I know that I have acquired many of the skill you are looking for to preform essential job functions. At the banking call center I was expected to answer calls, log conversations, route calls, and other operational task. As a liaison for my department, I would also communicate and train other departments, work on special projects, collect and sort data.
This good would be considered self rewarding because you know you are changing someone’s life for the better and giving them what they need to be successful while keeping them away from harm. A bachelor’s degree is usually needed for entry level of social work. There are also master programs of social work that could be used and received without a bachelor’s degree. Some universities offer doctoral programs in social work, students can earn doctorates of social work or Ph.D. The cost of social work varies depending on the university and your own income. To pursue this career, 4-6 years or possibly even 8 years of education will be needed to complete it to have either a bachelors or masters.
In pursuing my aspiration to become a clinical mental health counselor, I am driven by a deep-rooted desire to serve others, drawing strength from my Christian values, military background, experiences in foster care, and unwavering determination. Although I may not claim to possess the sharpest intellect, my unwavering work ethic and unyielding spirit to overcome challenges motivate me to fulfill my destined purpose of assisting and empowering individuals on their healing journeys. Doctor of Social Work Program Application Personal Statement Ashley Newberry LCSW, LISW As I child, I was introduced to the human service field in a unique way. For as long as I can remember, my mother has had a human service profession and provided me with daily examples of how to help others. One of my earliest memories is riding out a hurricane while we stayed in the adult group home where my mother worked, assisting with safety measures for residents and providing comfort to her community. My mother worked in multiple residential programs throughout my life, specializing her work with individuals with developmental and physical disabilities.
As the Speaker of the House, you are an influential asset to the Michigan House of Representatives and a catalyst for change. I am writing you as an impassioned social work student graduating in April of 2018 who has made it her mission to advance social justice for all and advocate for human rights to be granted to all humans – born and unborn. My field placement for my final two semesters in the Bachelor of Social Work program at Grand Valley State University is at Dickinson Academy, a cultural center elementary school in southeast Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA. I have been able to apply what I have learned in course materials and in the classroom to the palpable situations our students and their families are facing.

Being an active duty military spouse, the military lifestyle has become a large part of my identity and I belong within the military community. Working for the Airman and Family Readiness Center as a Social Worker is very much a “calling” for me. When I was a new spouse without a support system, the stresses related to the military were much more than I ever imagined. Now that I am a seasoned spouse who will soon earn her MSW, I really want to be there for the new military members at the best of my abilities.
