I have the ability to engage in effective social work practice as I have been exposed to many settings which have provided me the groundwork build my competencies. I have been in a school setting to which I was providing individual and group therapy for students ages 5 through 18. I utilized cognitive behavioral therapy worksheets which are evidence-based and recognized the changes in some students. I ensured that the worksheets utilized were appropriate for whichever age group. During my time in the hospital setting, I built my skills in assessing client needs and coordinating with many community organizations for needed resources.
I have struggled to keep my school work a priority as I need to balance it with my part-time work and with the things I like to do to keep my life as normal as possible (like cheerleading and spending time with my friends). I am very honored and thankful to be the first the person in my family to attend college fall of 2016. As I strive to end my senior year positive, I always remember to tell my younger siblings to try as hard as they can in school, because “education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” I’ve decided that I would like to get my degree in social work, specifically working with children. Growing I’ve been around kids that are unhappy with thier home, but couldn’t do anything about it.
After completing my B.S in Community Human Services at Empire State College, I felt extremely fulfilled in my accomplishment. I felt like I did accomplish my ultimate goal which was becoming qualified to work with Juveniles in the system to help make a difference in their lives. I thought I could have been a unique asset to the system where I can be of assistance in problem solving alongside my affiliates and bosses working together in unison to accomplish the same goal, which is to be effective administrators to foster growth and productivity in the lives of the youths. For as long as I can remember, my mother has had a human service profession and provided me with daily examples of how to help others. One of my earliest memories is riding out a hurricane while we stayed in the adult group home where my mother worked, assisting with safety measures for residents and providing comfort to her community. My mother worked in multiple residential programs throughout my life, specializing her work with individuals with developmental and physical disabilities.
I began college in 2014 at the age of 58 years-old to change my area of employment and do something that is far more interesting to me, working within the social services field. I realize the fact I was brought up by two dysfunctional, abusive parents in a chaotic home lead me to search out that same type of familiar relationship when I left home at the age of seventeen. In short, I married a domestic violence abuser and alcoholic when I was 19 years-old and had 5 children. Ten years into the marriage, when I had finally reached the end of my rope, a local police officer helped me to obtain a Protection from Abuse order and removed my husband from the home. A bachelor’s degree is usually needed for entry level of social work. There are also master programs of social work that could be used and received without a bachelor’s degree. Some universities offer doctoral programs in social work, students can earn doctorates of social work or Ph.D. The cost of social work varies depending on the university and your own income. To pursue this career, 4-6 years or possibly even 8 years of education will be needed to complete it to have either a bachelors or masters.

Being an active duty military spouse, the military lifestyle has become a large part of my identity and I belong within the military community. Working for the Airman and Family Readiness Center as a Social Worker is very much a “calling” for me.
