In our society, people with and without disabilities are granted rights. Throughout history, disabled people weren’t granted as many rights as people without disabilities. Disability rights have expanded greatly since the 1800s where they were forced to be put in institutions. Now, disabled people have many rights wherever they go and many people have impacted that change. Trauma is like a wound that never quite heals, a burden that we carry with us long after the event has passed. From the Ashes, vividly illustrates the lasting impact of trauma, both on an individual and on a community level. Jesse Thistle lived through many traumatic events through his experiences of addictions, homelessness and family problems. Despite the challenges he faces, Jesse's journey also demonstrates the incredible resilience of the human spirit and the power of healing and self-discovery. From the Ashes serves as an important reminder of the ongoing effects of trauma within Indigenous communities.
After completing my B.S in Community Human Services at Empire State College, I felt extremely fulfilled in my accomplishment. I felt like I did accomplish my ultimate goal which was becoming qualified to work with Juveniles in the system to help make a difference in their lives. I thought I could have been a unique asset to the system where I can be of assistance in problem solving alongside my affiliates and bosses working together in unison to accomplish the same goal, which is to be effective administrators to foster growth and productivity in the lives of the youths. However, I quickly learn or come to a realization that our children of tomorrow need more than just an attentive ear, a shoulder to lean on, and an empathetic individual. In
Rutgers University School of Social Work is an intense and competitive program that is well-known for shaping some of the finest and highest skilled social workers today. As an aspiring social worker, I want to attend a MSW program that will challenge and prepare me for a successful career and I know that Rutgers University School of Social Work is the institution that will do just that. As an undergraduate law and justice major, I have always dreamed of pursuing a career in the field of law as a defense attorney. However, when asked why, I was never able to provide an answer.
For centuries, the special needs community has been unable to get the accommodations needed for them to be proficient members of their communities. Mainly, this stems from a lack of knowledge of the brains and needs of people with special needs. This reality is showcased in the Steinbacks novel, Of Mice and Men, and Modern Society. During the 20th century, the special needs community struggled greatly. Having mental disabilities made life complicated for many families; the lack of resources and knowledge about special needs made it virtually impossible to get adequate accommodations.
I believe there are many people in today’s society that go above and beyond to fight for the rights of individuals with disabilities. For example today in many and most schools they have extra aids and support groups for children with learning disabilities. These aids and support groups allow the child to remain in a regular classroom by giving them the extra help and guidance they need

I joined this program as a mentor for two students, one who has intellectual disabilities and the other who has intellectual and developmental disabilities. I help my mentees to be a part of Union’s community academically, socially, and residentially. The ultimate goal of the EDGE program is to prepare individuals to work in a job setting by strengthening academic, social, communication, technological, and vocational skills. This program also helps to expose student without disabilities to student with disabilities, lessening the gap between the two. This helps combat injustice in schooling and also gives people a chance to overcome stereotypes.
In my intent to pursue occupational therapy, my ambitions have further flourished. I want to shift people’s perspectives of disabilities and bring international recognition to occupational therapy for its influence in the health and development of communities. In my mother country where I grew up, and in Nicaragua where I had the opportunity to serve and teach, I watched with frustration as disabled individuals were silenced and overlooked. I know far too well the stigma of seeking professional help. I have talked to parents who think that it means admitting there is something wrong with their child.
Over 19.9% of our population has some type of a disability. An estimated 48.9 million people have a disability, and 24.1 million of those people live with a severe disability. We need to have a better understanding of those with disabilities, whether it be a visible or invisible disability, they way that they have been viewed in the past, or the everyday barriers that they come upon. Throughout history the treatment of the disabled has been rather cruel. According to an article from the Paul Burtner College of Dentistry, it stated “Institutions were built by state and local administrative agencies to house people with developmental disabilities.
Because of biases and obstacles to employment, housing, and education, people with disabilities may have more difficulty achieving the American Dream. Although the government offers help, more must be done to make sure that those with disabilities have equal opportunities and may actively participate in and contribute to their communities. It is time for society to recognize the contributions made by people with disabilities and to work toward resolving the issues that contribute to and block their ability to achieve the American
Nevertheless the UNICEF World Report on Disability (2011) very truthfully states that “[a]lmost everyone will be temporarily or permanently impaired at some point in life, and those who survive to old age will experience increasing difficulties in functioning.” Another point that should be kept in mind is that whilst some disabilities are clearly visible for one to appreciate a person’s difficulties (e.g. physical), there are many conditions which are not (e.g. cognitive, auditory or visually impaired, pertaining to mental health). Thus, it is important to promote awareness of all kinds of disabilities. As an aspiring health professional, experiencing the struggles these individuals must face in their daily lives is eye-opening, and it is obvious that more must be done to help enable these individuals.

For as long as I can remember, my mother has had a human service profession and provided me with daily examples of how to help others. One of my earliest memories is riding out a hurricane while we stayed in the adult group home where my mother worked, assisting with safety measures for residents and providing comfort to her community. My mother worked in multiple residential programs throughout my life, specializing her work with individuals with developmental and physical disabilities.
