One takeaway I have from my undergraduate experience as a BSW student is that passion is always evolving. The reason I decided to become a social work major is not the sole reason that kept the motivation throughout the past four years. Based on my personal life experiences and time served at the PASS Program, I saw this population following between the cracks of the education system. Throughout the semester, I played six different roles during the process of creating the project. In the beginning, I wore the blue hat, which symbolizes the conductor’s hat. I shared this role with my classmates, who brought a different perspective to the process. The majority of my classmates attend field in an academic setting so they are aware of the importance of the project. Also, other co-workers within the PASS Program generated creative approaches to attract the students into the program. When researching who my allies and targets would be, I wore the black hat, which symbolizes the devil’s advocate role. When advocating and educating the key stakeholders, I had to put myself in their shoes and think like they would think. I had to think of issues that may be seen as potential problems and address the solution before the problem occurs. Through several debates in class, I was able to look at certain areas that may show weakness and focus on their strengths. The yellow hat, which symbolizes an optimistic view, is one I did not take off throughout the process. I feel this is the most important one because it symbolizes the fuel that keeps the project afloat.
