“The goal of socialism is communism,” a quote by Vladimir Lenin that in six words may challenge to summarize Warren Lerner’s “A History of Socialism and Communism in Modern Times.” In this book Lerner provides an informational device for readers to learn and understand the history of socialism and communism in addition to the roles that theorists, activists, and humanists had in the creation of such. The book incorporates the aspects pertaining to the history including honorable mentions of the events that took place leading to and during the formation, groups that were focused on, and individual persons that helped form the ideology of what it was perceived of in the past and what it is seen as today. Isaac Newton was a philosopher who Lerner stated to have had an incredible impact in the world science, political thought, and in religion even becoming the touchstone of the Deist movement. Newton is responsible for the development of scientific laws to explain political arrangements and the separation of political laws into those of manmade and natural laws. Another mention was credited to Jean Jacques Rousseau, a French Philosopher that was known to be one of the most brilliant. He put a primary focus on the injustices in his society though his private life would have contradicted his intentions due to the fact that he put all of his kids into orphanages. Despite that Rousseau had wrote books that contributed to the socialist movement and humanity including “The Discourse of Inequality” and “The Social Contract” that of which Lerner stated to be the revolutionary idea of popular sovereignty.
