This TV show is a comedic cartoon that follows a character named peter griffin. Though the show is crude and merciless at its attempt to wow its viewers with its Graphic and completely inappropriate comedy, it does entail quite the amount of sociological concepts however when watching the show they could be very easy to miss. Back to peter Griffin however. He has a son a daughter, a friend and a dog that I will be discussing. I chose these 5 characters because I believe that they each have their own sociological concept that ties to them.
The “Outsiders” made me think about the rules that groups give us are strongly founded on what they see as defiance. It made me think that some rules are given within a group are not remotely necessary and that we as a society are to blame for what is deemed as “socially acceptable”. Deviants may not even be actually deviants but that’s what they are labeled by society because they think, what the deviant did was wrong, which could be made up by what society thinks is okay behavior. The relation to this reading and the sociology course shows how society controls us and how they consider we should act. It reminded me of how society tells us as women that showing off our body parts is deemed as trashy and not lady like, but men can do so without
Garfinkel in my opinion was a sociological genius, because he took something undetected and made it detectable. It seems silly to perform an experiment on how people act daily, but this type of work made it possible for others to understand and even break away from social norms. Background assumptions according to Garfinkel are all about how we perceive the world around us by doing what is expected in everyday situations. For example, if you were to walk into a fancy restaurant wearing a T-shirt and jeans, you are breaking a social norm. This leaves the people around you questioning your judgement and character.
Rebekah Blair 1/19/2017 Sociological imagination is, as defined in our textbook, the ability to see the connections between our personal experience and the larger forces of history. So basically, it is speaking of the relationship between who we are as people and the social forces that shape our lives around us, saying that we think about certain things in ways because of what happens around us. Even though we may think that we are going through something alone and nobody understands us, to me, this is saying that our personal experiences are not all our own after all.
One thing the media has contributed greatly to is the misconceptions of race within crime statistics. The civil rights battles ongoing mentioned previously includes a movement appropriately named “black lives matter” through various social media hashtags. The movement began shortly after many incidents of white citizens or police officers shot and killed black citizens, many children, with no repercussions of their murderous actions. It was many media outlets that began to be under scrutiny when they portrayed the victims in a harsh unforgiving way in the light of the fact they were black. Cheerleading is very fun and entertaining sport that can also be doubled as a very dangerous sport almost as more dangerous than football. Most people think of cheerleaders as being the girls who cheer on the sidelines at football or basketball teams, but it’s a lot more than just cheering at a football game. No one sees the behind the scenes actions of cheerleading, no one sees how hard we practice on a everyday basis. But in these long, hard working practices, there are injuries, some minor and some major. Cheerleading as evolved into a athletic and high skilled sport but the higher the skills reach, the bigger chance of getting injured.
In Sociology, “Sociological imagination is a person’s ability to connect his personal experiences to the society at large and to a greater extent, to historical forces. Sociological imagination allows a person to question customs or habits that seem natural to him. It is a person’s ability to think away from the familiar routines people take in everyday life.” (“What is The Sociological Imagination, 2016). In other words, the sociological imagination focuses on the idea of someone understanding on who what why and how certain things shape the way a person lives or interacts with people.
It allows one to understand hoe the society fits together and the consequences that might arise when the community is affected by social change. Secondly, sociology enables one to develop a sense of appreciation for the diversities that are found in a set of people. It includes the need to understand the past events; the connection to the society in which we live in and personal life experiences in a particular setting with define values and customs. Sociological is an important element as it allows the society and individuals to relate to various circumstances in their daily activities at local and international levels that are paramount to them. The lack of ability to relate to these situations individuals would be unable to perceive the societal elements that affect them and thus cannot make the changes that would be essential in their lives. Throughout history, different countries have obtained various levels of social imagination and thrived. However, some are yet to experience it while others have already lost it.
In today’s modern society, everyone is largely affected by society. From multiple social institutions like the government and economy for instance or even the effects of education and mass media; these all play a huge role in an individual’s relationship, behavior, and actions in their society. For an individual to understand things like a “culture” or why every society has a ‘social class hierarchy,’ they will be directed to “Sociology”. Sociology is the systematic study of the structures of human society and social interaction. Sociology attempts to understand how things like society, social events, interactions, and patterns influence the way humans think, act, and feel.
It’s emergence become prompted by the methods of natural sciences, and within that perception, that society can only be studied through legal guidelines. Only then, sociological research is much coherent and the findings may be generalized unto certain extent. Hence, not all sociological finding is revolutionary. Many findings eventually seem to agree with common sense. In relation to this, one way that a sociologist can find out whether a belief is true or the other way round is by systematically test the common sense belief against facts.
According to the Dictionary, Sociology is defined as the study of the development, structure, and functioning of human society. This means that people are willing to study social problems throughout the world and the society that they live in. In my life, I deal with my social class, Gender, Race, Religion, and the time I was born. Because of who I am, I definitely have been a part of a different upbringing and lifestyle that many sociologist may find interesting.
Sociology is defined as the study of humans, societies and social groups within societies. It is also said to be the ‘science of society’. The subject of sociology tries to help us to understand why we act in certain ways and that what may come across as inevitable may perhaps be shaped and moulded by historical events and processes. It is important as it helps us gain knowledge of the world in which we live and why certain things happen within this world. Patterns may also develop from the study of sociology.

We can see these subject matters crystal clear as sociology ranges from crime to religion, from the family to the state, from the divisions of race and social class to the shared beliefs of a common culture and from social stability to radical change in whole societies.
