Back in January, when I first opened the textbook, I had little background information on sociology. All I knew, or I thought I knew was that sociology was the study of people. After this semester, I now know sociology is and consists of a lot more than that. Not only was my background information scanty, I was extremely overwhelmed after the first couple of weeks of class. The textbook dived right into the information and there was a lot of it. To start off, I now know the true definition of sociology. Sociology is the systematic study of social groups, social interactions, and society. This definition in itself contains broad terms that deepen the meaning of sociology. Over the semester, we have covered so many topics that explain the hardships that other groups of people suffer through, and also explained why those hardships exist. There are so many factors that go into simple things like how successful a student is throughout his or her education, to the job may or may not receive, and to how much money will be earned for that job. Particularly interesting to read was the chapter on gender inequality in the work force because I am a woman. Obviously, I would hope the pay gap continues to shorten as it has been, and also I hope that discrimination against women continues to diminish. There is no way to predict the future, but after reading this chapter gender equality could definitely be reached. Gender is not the only future predicting factor. In fact, there are very many I was unaware of until this semester. A few examples would be: Race, Ethnicity, Social Class (which is usually the same throughout your life), Culture, and more throughout the textbook.
