Socrates and Descartes, two of the most prominent philosophers in history brought two very unique ways of questioning and answering questions. Both of these notable processes have their similarities and differences even though they came from very different people of thought. The Socratic Method or method of conversation from Socrates and the Methodological Doubt from Descartes. Socrates, a classical Greek philosopher is known for both his famous students of philosophy and his method of discussion. Thinkers similar to Socrates embrace their profession on conversation as an art of persuasion that can apply to everything. His methodological doubt was centered on his desire to examine ideas and concepts to which he thought to be true and to sift out those containing any amount of doubt. Descartes wanted to first consider what is meant when we as individuals say we know what reality, being, and existence is and that we must be able to justify knowledge in order for it to be truthful. His philosophies were based around the fact that we cannot claim anything as concrete without justification. His process started out with the doubting of all knowledge followed by the classification of beliefs by common characters. He would then apply a skeptical hypothesis for each followed by another much stronger hypothesis. Surrounding Descartes and his doubts were three main ideas about reality, knowledge, and life itself. The first was senses like sight including color and perception like the size, shape or color of something. He wondered if the objects we were viewing were actually the truth. The second was deemed the dream hypothesis, which Descartes questioned whether or not our reality was actually a dream. He questioned how we as individuals know that we are living or that we are not in a constant dream state. The third hypothesis he constructed was one where some higher being was deceiving our minds.
