Female’s only skating is a very interesting sport, full of intriguing and inspiring female figures. These women have trained for very long times, many since they were teens. Now, let’s start with all of the origins. What really is figure skating, and how did it start? Well, the Dutch originally used skates to travel from place to place on ice. Two Americans are the reason for the progression of the sport. In 1850, Edward Bushell from Philadelphia completely changed figure skating when he debuted his new addition to skates: steel blades. This allows intricate and difficult moves and turns. Jackson Haines was a ballet master living in Vienna in and around the 1860s. He added parts of ballet and dance to give the sport its elegance. Starting in 1927, 14 year old figure skater Sonja Henie lept into the world’s eye by dominating the ice rink. Her olympic record is nearly impossible to beat, but not just that, she earned millions of dollars in Hollywood with several hit movies. She starred in movies such as One in a Million, My Lucky Star, and Thin Ice. At her young age, she won 3 olympic gold medals.
