Karen L. Wooley is a great example of an individual that uses chemistry everyday in her life. She is a very prosperous professor who is very well off, she lives in a mansion and owns a luxurious Maserati. Professor Wooley opened my eyes to a potential new path I could take due to the fact that she is very well off and successful. She delivered a very interesting lecture titled, ““Sophisticated Nanoscopic Macromolecules.” She began by introducing the role of chemists in the world, and how they are “control freaks”, due to the fact that they love to manipulate molecules at the sub-atomic level. Furthermore, she stated that synthetic chemists design and build molecules. As the lecture carried on, we were introduced to a world of polymers and monomers not visible to the naked eye and even for some instances, not even visible through the utilization of a microscope. As Professor Wooley stated, “Polymers are the simplest and most easily manipulated form of macromolecules.” …show more content…

Polymers exist in airplanes to maintain the aerodynamic properties the plane possesses and to serve as electrical insulators. There are polymers in waste bags also. Polymers exist in soap that enable the soap to locate and scoop any dirt molecules that exist on the body. Today, chemists may utilize polymers to attain oil & other waste disposal, relevant to the mass, in water which may put a halt to oil spills and pollution in water. Furthermore, chemists are also attempting to look for a new, less harmful way to treat cancer patients. Chemotherapy as we all know is very harmful to the cells of the human body, however, chemists are now developing a less harmful technique of treating cancer through the use of polymers. They are trying to develop sugars that will attack cancer cells while giving off energy to the patient, in contrast to chemotherapy, which kills the designated patient’s
