Soraya Mission Statement

427 Words2 Pages

Latin pop star Soraya did not shrink back from the diagnosis of breast cancer. Instead she used her voice to warn a silent community about the disease. Soraya’s website doesn’t have an actual ‘About Me’ page. There is a tab called ‘Her Life.’ Sadly Soraya succumbed to breast cancer on May 10, 2006. She survived one bout of Breast Cancer in remission, but sadly during the last year-and-a-half of her life was rediagnosed. During that time, Soraya lent herself to the cause a mouth piece as she did at the beginning of her diagnosis. She lived her mission statement “It is possible to make a difference.” Through the telling of her story, her website www.Soraya.com shows that she was a young woman committed to her mission.

Being of Latin descent, Soraya knew that many other Hispanic women were suffering from breast cancer, but due to cultural norms, they chose to remain silent. She decided at 31, to come forward and share the news of her disease. “Her frankness about her condition marked one of the first times a prominent Hispanic-American woman admitted to having breast cancer. Prior to her diagnosis, Soraya had already been serving as the Latin Ambassador for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® foundation, spreading the word about the importance of awareness and early detection. (2016, 01). Retrieved 01, 2016, from http://www.soraya.com/2.php …show more content…

“In loving memory of the three women her family had lost so painfully, breaking down the cultural barriers surrounding breast cancer became Soraya’s new mission”. (2016, 01). Retrieved 01, 2016, from
