Aspca Mission Statement

The ASPCA is an organization that strives to protect the safety, health, and rights of all animals. The acronym stands for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals, and this company was the first humane society to be established in North America. Founded in 1866 by Henry Bergh after the first animal cruelty legislation was passed, ASPCA is now the largest humane societies in the world. Bergh founded the organization with the ideal that “animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans and must be protected under the law.”(ASPCA.org) Similarly to the founding principles, the ASPCA mission statement reads ““to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States.” (ASPCA.org)

The first ASPCA shelter was opened in 1867 in Buffalo, New York, shortly after the company launched in 1866 in New York City. Henry Bergh hit the ground running with ASPCA, speaking at Clinton Hall in New York City advocating his organization’s causes. Bergh spoke about cockfighting and the horrors of slaughterhouses. While the report for 2016’s contributions are not yet out, the most recent report documenting the 2015 ASPCA year noted that the company received over $140 million dollars in contributions, memberships, grants and sponsorships. The organization has grown to protect animals in many different branches of animal cruelty, which include and are not limited too: Puppy Mills, Dog fighting, animal hoarding. farm animal welfare, horse slaughter, and a plethora of other issues like Greyhound racing and cock fighting.
