Home Sweet Home In 2006, the organization known as “ASPCA” first surfaced due to an emotional rollercoaster of a commercial they had produced. ASPCA is a charitable organization that donates the proceeds collected to rescue animals from cruelty events such as dog-fighting, puppy mills, hoarding, and neglect as well as many other situations. The animals are then provided with food, shelter, and any other care they may be in need of. Throughout the ad, the producers provide the viewers with multiple uses of ethos, pathos and logo to create a visual representation of what those watching the ad can do to benefit the animals shown.
Bill Maher, the social commentator wrote in the New York Times recently, an article about animal cruelty and specifically about pigs, where he talked about mother pigs being kept in crates, called gestation crates, their entire lives. They can’t even turn around. He asks would we cram a dog into a crate for that long and the answer is, of course we wouldn’t. Pigs are, at least as intelligent as dogs, as has been proven in various tests, so it is a colossal act of indecency to confine them in such a barbarous manner. He quotes the primatologist, Jane Goodall who wrote that ‘farm animals feel pleasure and sadness, excitement and resentment, depression, fear and pain.
What does it mean to be humane? According to Dictionary Reference, it states that humane means, “characterized by tenderness, compassion, and sympathy for people and animals, especially for the suffering or distressed,” (Dictionary Reference). In factory farms and slaughterhouses there is a severe problem taking control of America. Cruel, inhumane treatment towards animals while being raised and being murdered causes extreme suffering and health problems that can even be passed along to human consumers. All species of animals forcefully tortured to be sold to human buyers encounter similar conflicts when being imprisoned in their factories.

In other words animal cruelty is when humans disrespect animals in the act of hoarding, mills, dog fighting, slaughter, etc. Over the years Animal cruelty is similar in inflicts but different in laws , this is shown through the book Oliver twist (the Victorian era) compared to facts of now. Introduction: The artists Brett Murray, Sue Coe and Asher Jay all use their artworks to protest against or draw attention animal cruelty and their respective artworks greatly influenced me in how I created my artwork and drawing, as I had the same intention. For instance Brett Murray used cut outs and a combination of many objects and mediums in his collection entitled ‘Heritage’. Sue Coe used graphic and shocking imagery and repetition to show the viewer the consequences of animal cruelty and lastly Asher Jay uses very large and striking imagery to illustrate her stance against animal cruelty. At one point in your life, have you ever thought to yourself how was the meat on your plate produced, and why is it so cheap? Billions of farm animals are consumed every year in the U.S. at cheap costs and endure in conditions that buyers wouldn’t acknowledge. A large portion of our meats originate from meat industries that produce, abuse, and process meat for the public from farms that abuse animals unless the animal was raised organically. The meats that are produced are a necessity for a us omnivores because we eat meat on a daily basis as a source for protein and fat, unless you are vegetarian, or vegan. Now since it’s a necessity for us living beings, is cruelty in animal agriculture worth the outcome for better for our economy?
It is inhumane to remove a body part and inflict violent pain on an animal when anesthesia or other pain relief medications are readily available. Humane slaughtering practices, such as the use of stun guns, can alleviate some of the merciless treatment of farm animals, but it is not enough. Animal Cruelty is a problem that still occurs today and is evident in almost all parts of the world. The term “Animal Cruelty” refers to any form of inflicting physical pain, suffering or death on an animal (The MSPCA–Angell, n.d.). Ontario SPCA (n.d.) categorized animal cruelty into two categories: neglect, or intentional cruelty. Neglect is the failure to provide essential care that includes adequate water, food and shelter to the animal while intentional cruelty involves physical harm intentionally inflicted on an animal.
