The Religion of Southern College Football
In “Pulled Pork and Pigskin,” by Wright Thompson, the author discusses the religion-like qualities of college football in the south. Thompson provides Ole Miss as an example of college football traditions. However, Ole Miss is not the only team with unique qualities and traditions, and the author also lists some of the famous traditions from other college football teams across the south. Another strong example of a team with the qualities of a religion is the South Carolina Gamecocks. Passion is a quality that makes southern college football like a religion, and Carolina Gamecock fans display this quality with their culture and traditions.

Thompson lists the passionate traditions of many teams and writes, “I love ‘ARE YOU READY?’ and all the other SEC football idiosyncrasies, too, because they come from the same kind of passion…” Specific traditions are not southern college football special, it is the passion that drives these traditions that make it like a religion. Fans put so much of their heart and soul into cheering for these teams, and they are devoted, ready to defend them at any moment. Similarly, followers of religions often practice it in their everyday lives, and they are dedicated to following it. Thompson later adds, “...grandmothers in Chanel and pearls get worked up – i mean fired up, brother – about beating LSU.” This demonstrates the passion experienced by southern college football fans. Even grandmothers get worked up about it. That is the kind of passion behind it. It is the kind of passion where someone who might barely know anything about football will proudly defend their team.
