My topic concerns Spanish-language music and identities: how do Spanish-language music affect the development of self-identity in a university setting where they are uncommon? For example, how does Hispanic music convey cultural, gender, and racial identity in a university setting where everyone speaks English? How do they influence communication? Based on my exploration of my topic through the annotated bibliographies, concerns that emerged because of my topic is that I won’t be able to find specific information concerning a university setting. I will have to just grab information and sources and try to connect them and in some way answer my research questions. I need to someway explain how listening to foreign and uncommon music can affect someone’s life in college. How can it lead them to feel culturally and racially different or gender wise? In addition, I was given something different than I was looking for. I was able to find information that can help me answer only a section of my research questions. I found various articles on a specific Spanish genre that effect someone’s identity culturally. I did not find much that had to deal with gender or racial identities. The articles were also based on a specific country where the music was common. For instance, I read an article that discussed Salsa music and the affect it had on people in Puerto Rico.
