Usefulness of Sparks and Loader’s Personas in Contemporary Criminology In modern society, various criminologists and activists represent different values regarding specific crimes and they also believe in specific manners of addressing those crimes. Sparks and Loader (2011) identify six of those “personas” that are present in the criminological world; the Democratic Under Labourer, the Scientific Expert, the Policy Advisor, the Observer-Turned-Player, the Social Movement Theorist/Activist, and the Lonely Prophet. This paper will sequentially describe the purpose and duties of each individual persona by level relevance while also examining their usefulness to the contemporary criminal justice field. Because these personas excel in different aspects of the criminological world, each character will be examined individually based on situations where they either exceed or are inferior in comparison to the other personas. Although the level of importance of each persona is circumstantial, the Scientific Expert displays much more utility in their line of work than the other personas as they are versatile in the settings where they exceed and they depend on facts and evidence to support ideologies or to give professional input when needed. The techniques used by the Scientific Expert range from crime scene investigation to giving expert testimonies in courtrooms. Some techniques that are used in crime scene investigation which rely on scientific method include finger print analyses and collecting DNA samples (Liu, 2009). However, using the scientific method regarding the effectiveness of a proposed policy is different. When a new policy is proposed, the Scientific Expert gathers information on said policy such as where the policy has been put into place and compares crime rates before and after it was enforced.
