The Rules of the Game Starting out as a simplistic enjoyable pastime in the 1830’s, baseball flourished in 1856 as a national pastime. By 1857, way before Ian’s time, several sports clubs came together and created a governing body, which then made rules as well as regulations for this up and coming game. Sports have always been used as a pastime, and eventually for careers to entertain the hundreds of enthusiastic fans. Many that have a career in sports, may also use steroids. Even though Ian did not specifically play baseball, he was a sportsman. There has been great debate on whether Fielder used steroids during his career, but to this day he assures anyone who asks that he was clean his entire career, one of the only players to be clean in the ‘steroid era’. “Steroids do not take the place of skills in the game, they only further the skills used to hit the ball” (Mahan). Although Mcgwire stated that he used steroids to improve his health and not his game, many other baseball fans disagreed with his explanation, while the St. Louis Cardinals’ fans stood behind their beloved player. He had finally broken the 50 home run record that had been held for 37 years. Many had tried to break it, using any methods, especially steroids or other PEDs. In 2003 the baseball organization started testing players for steroids, 5-7 percent of the 1,438 tests came back positive that same year. When the results came back Bud Sellig stated in a press release that since the 5 percent mark had been reached, that mandatory steroid testing would start in the spring of 2004. Sellig had hoped that this would deter players from participating in steroid use. When Mark Mcgwire came out and admitted that he indeed did use steroids for a decade during his career, he stated that “It was the era we played in. I wish I never played in that era. I wish we had drug testing”(ESPN). Even saying that he was using it for health purposes “It’s a rule, if you break a rule, you should be punished for it. He (Mark Mcgwire) knew that it wasn’t allowed, but he still stuck a needle in his butt to hit the ball a bit harder. He didn’t need to take them” (Mahan). Ian believes that there is some truth in the fact that Mcgwire may have used steroids to not only improve his game, but his health as well since he had several injuries during his career.
