Santillana’s Spotlight on English Grade K consists of a balanced program that provides direct language instruction while developing academic language. This series of textbooks were developed to aid ELLs in grades K-8 in acquiring the English language accurately and achieve language proficiency. This textbook contains 8 integrated units that are designed to last about 6 to 8 weeks. Each unit includes 18 lessons that focus on the different academic content areas of Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science. It also incorporated lessons in the area of art and music to help gain the attention of the students.
B. Intended Audience The intended audience of the textbook, Santillana’s Spotlight on English Grade K’s is students in Kindergarten. Most of the lessons promote interaction among the students and teacher to help ELL students acquire English. When students are participating in the activities they are using the target language and are enhancing their second language acquisition skills that can be used outside the class to communicate with others. New vocabulary is introduced at the start of every lesson by the teacher and is reinforced throughout the stories and the lessons. Students are further developing vocabulary recognition through fun games such as vocabulary match where the students have to match the picture to the vocabulary word. Grammar skills are practiced in the unit through oral expressions during activities. For instance, during a lesson on family, the teacher might ask the students to point to people in the family and state who they are. The teacher will encourage the students to answer in sentence form by modeling the sentence starter, “This is the
