One thing that I know about my student that will help me know what to teach is that he loves sports. My student is a baseball player and has been playing baseball all his life. I am working on my credential to become a physical education teacher. I knew that this student would be perfect for this assignment because we would emphasize on something that we both liked. One area of growth for my student is going to be vocabulary which leads me to my tutoring strategies. I will develop vocabulary activities to help him understand vocabulary about physical fitness that he might not have heard before. Another area for growth after talking to his homeroom teacher is that he struggles with reading in English. This goes hand in hand with students struggling with vocabulary. My focus with tapping into prior knowledge is to get the attention while motivating him about the topics. Since my student loves sports I believe this will be a great way to give him the determination to improve in understanding vocabulary and reading. Another strategy I will implement to help my student with vocabulary and reading is to introduce hands on experiences. ELL students need the tactile-kinesthetic experiences to help them understand vocabulary better. For instance, I plan on teaching my student about what target heart rate means. One way I can show my student this is by physically showing him what it looks like to raise your heart rate. Running one lap around the track would be a great way to do that because it will raise his heart rate and I can show him that his heart rate went up.
