Content Area Teachers Should Teach Reading And Study

Students are given detailed instruction in reading during lower grades where they study phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, and comprehension. As student reach the older grades like middle and high school the focus on reading is not so intense, however the skill to read never fades out of schooling. I believe that content area teachers should teach reading and study skills to the students. The teaching of reading will not be the same as it is in the lower grades but it may still have some of the same strategies. Content area teachers are still able to integrate phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension into their lesson while teaching the curriculum. Some of the students may have an interest in biology and some students may not have much exposure with the topic. Student who are able to pull background knowledge about the topic will have better understanding of the text then the students who have no interest in the topic. (Richardson, et al, 2015) To help pull background knowledge and connect with the reading, the teacher can introduce the students to vocabulary they will find in the text. During this time, the teacher can review phonics and phonemic awareness with the students. There may be words that the student have never seen before or may need assistance with decoding. Reviewing these skills with the students will help with their fluency in reading the text and make comprehending the text easier. As a class the teacher can read the text and check for comprehension by asking questions. Reading aloud to the students will allow the student to see how the teacher reads the text and the students can model after the teacher. (S.
