Document Study 1, Ignatius of Antioch Ignatius of Antioch is also called Ignatius Theophoros, meaning “God Bearer” (Greek). He was the second Bishop of Antioch in Syria at the time of his arrest- 107A.D. He is mainly known from seven highly regarded letters that he wrote during a trip to Rome, as a prisoner condemned to be executed for his belief and is believed to have died c.110, in Rome by martyrdom during Trajan’s reign (AD. 98-117).
Denys Klimyentyev Filled with a desire to enact vengeance upon the Spanish, the infamous English corsair Sir Francis Drake and his crew set sail for the Spanish colonies in North America and the Caribbean. He gained a fearsome reputation when he captured Santo Domingo and Cartagena, two very well defended and lucrative possessions in quick succession. Though at the time Drake seemed like an all conquering corsair, he met his match and was surprisingly repulsed by the Spanish in the relatively minor colony of St. Augustine in La Florida. In the work Drake Destroys St. Augustine, James A. Covington describes this part of Drake’s adventures.
Today, many people think of Pensacola as an active metropolitan beach town that sits in the most western part of Florida’s panhandle. It is a town full of life and culture. Pensacola is a hub of entertainment, food, art, music, shops, and various other things; but it hasn’t always been this way. Pensacola is actually one of the most historic cities in all of Florida. It was a part of Spanish Florida and was the site for some historical and important events.
The Differences of the New World Indian Encounters by the Spanish Christopher Columbus and Hernan Cortes were two explorers that came into contact with the two native groups. Columbus was born in 1451 and grew up as an explorer and navigator completing many voyages. He reached Asia (the Indies) in 1492 discovering the New World. He believed that he was reaching India, but was mistaken when he analyzed the scale wrong and ended up on the opposite side of the globe. Cortes was born around 1845 and grew up as an explorer and Spanish conquistador.
St. Augustine is a city located in St. Johns county in northeastern Florida and is most known for being the oldest continuously occupied city in the United States, having been colonized by Spain in 1565. Prior to the 1513 landing of Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León (who christened the peninsula which he mistook for an island “La Florida” and claimed it for Spain), the area of land that is now called “St. Augustine” was inhabited by a population of natives known as the Timucua people. After the initial arrival of Juan Ponce de León in 1513, the Spanish would go on to make several unsuccessful attempts at colonization in Florida over the following 51 years. The Spanish were not alone in their pursuit to annex and settle land on the peninsula.
In “The Brief Account of The Devastations of the Indies” Bartolome de Las Casa is an account that speaks on the unfair treatment that indian people went through and endured during the early parts of the conquest to the island of Hispaniola. The spaniards were treating the indians cruel and were receiving less of their basic human rights. The author’s opinion was able to shine most throughout this account not only because of the sacrifices he made in order to make a change but how heavily he was against some of the ways of the Spaniards. He felt that the behavior of the Spaniard christians was unfair and unacceptable. He spends time being very detailed about the loss of indies people on the islands.
St. Augustine was a settlement founded by European explorers in 1565 by Pedro Menendez de Aviles. Although Juan Ponce de Leon discovered Florida in 1513 it was King Phillip II of Spain who ordered Pedro Menendez de Aviles to secure St. Augustine for Spain to deter France, who the Spanish did not trust, from claiming the territory making it the oldest city in the United States. The Conquistadors quickly overwhelmed the Timucua Indians who were the original people living in the territory with their protective armor , fire arms, horses, strategic battles and diseases like smallpox that spread through the native people who had no immunity. The Conquistadors believed it was their divine duty to bring Christianity to what they felt was barbaric
Young Augustine and elderly Scrooge both have an imbalance between superficial success and internal happiness. In Augustine’s anecdote about his encounter with a drunk beggar he is miffed by the happiness of a seemingly hopeless beggar. Despite his success in his career, Augustine’s internal struggle to find meaning prevents him from achieving happiness. On the other hand, Scrooge requires three trips with ghosts to realize that there is a better path of existence.
He studied philosophy and theology in Alexandria. Athanasius succeeded Bishop Alexander when he died in 328, and during his first few years in office he went to places like Libya and Egypt, and he got important contacts with Monks while there. In between this time, he was exiled many times, but returned home for a few years of
Saint Augustine was born in the town of Tagaste in the Roman Province of Numidia in North Africa. The town Tagaste was located in the north-east highlands of Numidia which was sixty miles from Hippo. Hippo was known as the sea-side city where Augustine spent his last forty years of life. Hippo was fifteen miles from Madura which was where St. Augustine went to prep school. The town was also one-hundred fifty miles from Carthage on the coast of Tunisia which was where St. Augustine grew his education strong and this was also where St. Augustine's teaching career started.
St. Augustine of Hippo Augustine was born on November 13, 354. 40 miles from the coast of Africa in a small Roman town called Tagaste. His parents sometimes borrowed money to fund Augustine’s first class education. Even though Augustine did have at least one other brother and sister his parents only sent him off to get an education.
As for the others, Augustine was sent to preach and do missionary work as well in the English nation along with several other monks for he was the servant of God (Bede, 78). Columba was born in Ireland and entered the monastic school where he studied and completed his training. He then went to the Monastery of Clonard that was governed by a monk by the Finnian, while at the same time he was ordained as a priest by Bishop Etchen of Clonfad. Columba then left to do missionary work after a major conflict with Finnian over copying a manuscript and founded a new Monastery in Ireland with 12 disciples (Adamnan, 81).
However, he was considered as a bright and ambitious person. His parents were both catholic, so he attended St Paul academy, where his first piece of writing was published in the school newspaper, until he was 15, where he was to Newman School.
Humans have free will, but God knows their fate. In Book V of the City of God, Saint Augustine discusses the matter of fate and free will pertaining to having a relationship with God. Within that section of the text he makes many statements about how humans have the freedom to make their own choices, but God ultimately knows the outcome. Logically, this make sense. If God created everything, then this would mean He has created everything in the past, present and future.
Augustine of Hippo was a Christian philosopher who played a big part and impacted Christianity greatly. Augustine helped Christianity by helping the Church by finding answers to questions that could have damaged the Church if they went unanswered. He explained to the Church original sin, the Trinity, and clarified the concept of predestination. Augustine was the bishop in the city of Hippo located in North Africa. He was the son of the famous Saint Monica, but despite his mother being a devout Christian his father believed in paganism.
